Role & Responsibilities：

Double role: Head for the Innovation Unit (IU) in China and Head of Experimental Medicine (ExpMED) China.

As Head of IU China: Translates global IU strategy (IUEC / TA leadership) into site execution. To ensure portfolio delivery, resource prioritization, and organizational effectiveness at site level by leveraging in depth Chinese market understanding incl. strong network and experience in Therapeutic areas relevant for Boehringer IU strategy. Fosters open communication and our Behaviors. Acts as the interface between global IU leadership and local site operations/development with local talent development and administrative tasks. Member of TCM Leadership Team.

As Head of ExpMED China: Accountable for defining and executing ExpMED strategy and operations in China, aligned with global ExpMED and Innovation Unit (IU) priorities. The role leverages China’s clinical, regulatory, and innovation ecosystem to accelerate CS‑to‑PoC development, enable evidence generation, and build a high‑performing, compliant, and globally connected ExpMED organization operating at China speed and quality. As a senior ExpMED leader and China site integrator, the role ensures that China contributes differentiated scientific, operational, and talent value to the global pipeline while upholding BI’s global standards for ethics, quality, and governance.

As IU Site Head in China will take care, together with the IU Site Leadership team, of:

Communication & Culture
Foster a site culture conducive to open communication, strong accountability to IU strategies, and to a strong sense to win in compliance with policies
Convey information in an orchestrated manner. Highlight success stories and areas for improvements to enhance site productivity and execution excellence
Ensure the teams feel safe to provide unfiltered feedback

Site operations/development
Ensure local operations associated with facilities and Site CAPEX budget are executed according to plans and timelines
Optimize Site CapEx to meet IU productivity goals
Participate in Country Leadership meetings as needed

People & Administration
Implement initiatives to enhance cross functional collaboration and to recruit and retain top talent
In partnership with HR, foster consistent approaches and policies across IU functions
Lead implementation of global IU priorities as they relate to the site and ensure full alignment with overall IU direction

Enable pipeline acceleration by progressing selected assets through early clinical development using China speed, scale, and cost advantages.
Ensure generation of China‑specific clinical and translational evidence that supports global development, regulatory, and value strategies.
Drive continuous improvement in cycle time, quality, and decision efficiency across China‑based early clinical programs.

Strategic Leadership & Portfolio Impact
Define and execute ExpMED China strategy aligned with global ExpMED, the IU, and portfolio priorities.
Shape China-based early clinical strategies that
accelerate CS-to-PoC decision-making and increase global pipeline value. Define strategic positioning in local biotech ecosystem, including strategy for competition for sites, patients, talent.
Represent ExpMED China in global portfolio, governance, and investment forums in line with defined decision
thresholds.

Matrix & Stakeholder Leadership
Act as senior ExpMED/IU representative to the external China R&D ecosystem and Innovation Hub stakeholders, and internally to the Innovation Unit leadership and Business Unit (BU) organization.
Serve as ExpMED lead for China‑sourced external clinical partnerships, including academia, biotech, CROs, and innovation ecosystems.

Organizational & Talent Leadership
Build, lead, and sustain a high‑performing ExpMED China organization, including translational, clinical, and operational capabilities.
Develop China as a talent accelerator for global ExpMED through capability building, succession planning, and cross‑border mobility.
Foster an inclusive, high‑accountability culture aligned with BI leadership behaviors and scientific excellence.

Governance, Compliance & Quality
Provide ExpMED leadership for CS‑to‑PoC decisions in China‑based programs in line with global governance frameworks.
Ensure full compliance with global SOPs, GxP, quality standards, and ethical requirements while adapting execution to local regulatory realities.
Proactively identify and manage scientific, operational, and compliance risks.

Required Capabilities:

MD/PhD

Significant experience in Experimental Medicine / early clinical development.
Senior leadership experience in complex, matrixed R&D environments.
Demonstrated experience working in or with China‑based R&D and clinical ecosystems.
Full adherence to global R&D, GxP, and ethics standards.
In depth understanding with the Chinese market incl. strong network with investigators and experience in Therapeutic areas relevant for Boehringer IU strategy.
Strong local compliance culture aligned with Chinese regulatory requirements.
Proactive risk identification and escalation.
