Job Description

BlueScope is an Australian born, global success story, spanning 18 countries, with a team of over 16,500 people. We’re driven by innovation and are proud that the technologies in our products and brands, like COLORBOND® steel, inspire and protect everything from hospitals and bridges to stadiums and homes.

We are seeking a Head of Health & Safety, Australia & New Zealand to lead health and safety improvement and risk reduction across our ANZ and Pacific operations.

The role reports directly to the Global Head of HSE, and indirectly to the Chief Executive ANZ, and is a key member of the global HSE Leadership Team

This is a senior leadership role with regional accountability and global influence. You will be responsible for embedding the Global HSE strategy within the region, strengthening safety leadership capability, and ensuring effective governance, assurance and risk management across a large, diverse operational footprint.

We’re looking for a credible, people‑centered HSE leader with deep experience in operational risk environments and the confidence to influence at Executive and Board level.

Ideally this role will be based in Melbourne, Sydney or Wollongong.

This role is suited to someone who can clearly connect health and safety outcomes to broader business strategy, and who leads with presence, sound judgement, and consistency across complex operations. You will bring a strong focus on building leadership and functional HSE capability, while effectively balancing enterprise alignment with practical, site-based execution. You will also be comfortable operating across governance, culture, systems, and incident response, navigating each with a steady and considered approach

Responsibilities include:

  • Lead the delivery of health and safety strategy across Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific
  • Provide counsel and oversight to senior leaders on risk, incidents, regulatory matters and assurance
  • Strengthen safety leadership capability and frontline risk management
  • Oversee HSE governance, systems, reporting and assurance processes
  • Lead incident response, regulatory engagement and significant risk events
  • Drive continuous improvement in critical risk controls, culture and safety systems
  • Lead and develop a regional HSE leadership team and broader functional network

Qualifications

We’re looking for a senior HSE leader with credibility in complex operational environments, who can connect health and safety outcomes to business performance and strategy. This role requires a leader who balances strong governance with practical delivery, builds safety leadership capability at scale, and influences confidently across Executive, Board and site leadership. You will bring sound judgement, presence and a people‑centred approach to managing risk, culture and continuous improvement across a diverse regional footprint

You’ll bring:

  • Senior HSE leadership experience in complex, multi‑site or industrial environments
  • Strong knowledge of OHS legislation, compliance and safety risk management
  • Proven ability to influence senior leaders and lead large, dispersed teams
  • Experience integrating global strategy into regional delivery
  • A calm, practical and people‑centred leadership style

Experience across heavy manufacturing, mining or high‑hazard industries will be highly regarded.
