Job Description

FlexStaff is seeking a Head of Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) for our client, a leading innovator in the food distribution industry, located in the Bronx.

The Head of Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) will lead the company's efforts to create and maintain a safe, healthy, and compliant work environment. This role is responsible for developing and executing strategies that reduce risk, prevent injury, and ensure compliance with all applicable regulations.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Lead company-wide safety culture initiatives to drive accountability, engagement, and continuous improvement.
  • Ensure compliance with all federal, state, and local regulations (OSHA, DOT, EPA) and company EHS policies.
  • Develop, implement, and enforce comprehensive EHS programs and procedures across all departments.
  • Conduct audits, inspections, and risk assessments to ensure regulatory compliance and identify improvement opportunities.
  • Oversee design, delivery, and tracking of all safety and certification training for employees, contractors, and management.
  • Lead investigations into accidents, injuries, and near-miss incidents; identify root causes and implement corrective actions.
  • Serve as the primary liaison with regulatory agencies, auditors, and safety vendors.
  • Coach, mentor, and manage the EHS team—including the EHS Manager, Occupational Health Supervisor, and Safety Specialist—to ensure development and high performance.
  • Establish and monitor safety performance metrics to track progress and influence strategic decisions.

REQUIREMENTS

  • Bachelor’s degree (required) or Master’s degree (preferred) in Occupational or Environmental Health and Safety or related field.
  • 10+ years of progressive EHS experience, ideally in a food manufacturing or plant environment.
  • Professional certification such as Certified Safety Professional (CSP) or Certified Hazard Control Manager (CHCM).
  • Strong knowledge of OSHA 30 (General Industry), DOT, EPA, and other relevant regulations.
  • Proven experience designing and leading safety programs and training initiatives.
  • Exceptional leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively across teams and influence at all organizational levels.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Project, Outlook).
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish) a plus.
