To perform the role of Head of Department (HoD) within the division. The responsibilities and authorities of the HOD in Mineralogy in relation to post requirements of managerial, technical and key support personnel are outlined.

  • Responsible for the day-to-day technical coordination and operation of the Mineralogy division, including operation and maintenance of the XRD and AUTOSEMs.
  • Responsible for the effective and efficient running of the mineralogical equipment (AUTOSEM, XRD, Optical Microscopes, Carbon Coater etc) with very low downtime.
  • Assist management with work routing, formulating changes, improving workflow and maximum utilization of resources in the department.
  • Will need to take on some technical projects as needed when the workload requires it.
  • Assist management in achieving TAT and the technical execution of all projects in the division.
  • Coordinate with the mineralogist for the best execution of Mineralogy projects to external clients, as well as for projects for the Metallurgy and geochemistry divisions.
  • Assist management with the development, effective utilization and supervision of human resources in Bryanston, including training, recruitment and discipline.
  • Responsible for the quality control of accurate mineralogical data and high-quality technical reports delivered on schedule and within budget, ensuring client satisfaction for all projects in Mineralogy
  • Assist with results evaluation and troubleshooting.
  • Keep abreast of new trends and current developments in Mineralogy.
  • Provide input for larger technical proposals for complex deposits and appropriate mineralogy approaches.
  • Work is scheduled and carried out promptly, and relevant quality benchmarks are maintained for the mineralogist team to execute work in Bryanston.
  • Responsible for arranging technical talks of projects (from Staff) within the division monthly to include the sample preparation team at the Bryanston office.
  • Provide input in CAPEX needs of the Mineralogy Division (All operations) to the Mineralogy Manager as and when needed to improve operations.
  • Adhere to all quality and safety requirements of the SGS management system.
  • Perform any other reasonable task as assigned by the direct line manager.
  • Part of the succession plan for the Mineralogy Operations. Will need to act on behalf of the Mineralogy Manager when needed.

Qualifications

Qualification and Skills

  • B.Sc Honours in Geology.
  • Candidate must have 7–10 years of relevant industry experience.
  • Project management and supervisory experience will be an added advantage.
  • Good communication, people and financial skills
  • Project and Time Management skill

Additional Information

  • The position requires the HOD to travel between Bryanston and Randfontein operations for meetings when required.
