What’s the role?

The Head of Data Practice is accountable for leading Westpac’s Group data and analytics culture and practice, embedding data‑led decision‑making, responsible usage and clear accountability across all Divisions. The role drives a step‑change in how data, analytics and AI are understood, trusted and used, building future‑ready enterprise capability through literacy, citizen development and advanced craft uplift.

As custodian of the Group’s data and analytics practice, the role sets the standards, frameworks, patterns and maturity measures that ensure consistency, control and sustainable value from data and analytics investments, while enabling safe, scalable adoption across the organisation.

Key Responsibilities:

Data & Analytics Culture and Leadership

  • Define and lead the Group‑wide data and analytics culture strategy, embedding data‑led decision‑making, responsible usage and accountability into business planning, operating rhythms and executive decision forums.
  • Act as a visible enterprise leader and advocate for data‑led behaviours, fostering trust, adoption and value creation across Westpac.

Workforce, Capability & Practice Governance

  • Define and execute the Group Strategic Workforce Plan for Data & Analytics, including:
  • Future capability and skills forecasting
  • Graduate and early‑career pipelines
  • Recruitment standards and role clarity
  • Performance, progression and succession planning
  • Own and evolve the enterprise data and analytics practice, including standards, frameworks, patterns, maturity measures and quality expectations governing how data, analytics and AI are delivered

Enterprise Governance & Enablement

  • Establish and lead enterprise governance forums for data, analytics and AI to drive alignment, prioritisation and consistent decision‑making across Divisions and Functions.
  • Enable safe, scalable adoption of data, analytics and AI through self‑service, automation and reuse, improving speed to insight and time‑to‑value within approved guardrails.
  • Provide expert oversight, challenge and escalation for material or high‑risk analytics and AI use cases.

Capability Uplift & Community Leadership

  • Drive enterprise‑wide capability uplift, including data and analytics literacy, citizen development and advanced analytics and AI skill development.
  • Provide leadership for the data and analytics community, establishing clear career pathways, role standards and capability expectations that lift engagement, inclusion and diversity.

Enterprise Assets & Value Realisation

  • Own the consolidation and governance of enterprise data and analytics assets, ensuring reuse, consistency, quality and scalability across platforms and business units.
  • Ensure sustained business value from data, analytics and AI investments through strong cultural adoption and consistent execution.

Key Outcomes

  • Measurable uplift in data literacy and data‑led decision‑making behaviours across the organisation.
  • Increased adoption and effective use of analytics, AI and self‑service tools within approved governance and risk guardrails.
  • Improved consistency, reuse and quality of data and analytics practices across Divisions.
  • Demonstrable progress in enterprise data and analytics maturity.
  • A future‑ready data and analytics workforce, aligned to the Strategic Workforce Plan and supported by strong talent pipelines, capability reviews and succession planning.
  • Sustained business value from analytics and AI investments.

Governance & Risk Accountabilities

  • Operate within approved risk appetite, embedding governance across data usage, analytics usage, privacy and ethics.
  • Ensure data and analytics outputs are trusted, explainable, auditable and decision‑ready, enabling executive and Board confidence.
  • Maintain effective controls, assurance, documentation and issue management in line with Group policies.
  • Act as a visible role model for strong data‑led leadership behaviours across Westpac.
