The Head of Data Engineering is accountable for building and operating a scalable and reliable data engineering capability that underpins VELUX’s global data platform (Snowflake / dbt) and AI initiatives. The role is within our IT & Digital Enablement organisation and leads the Data Engineering function end-to-end, with responsibility for people, delivery, engineering quality, and day-to-day operations of the platform.
Your responsibilities:
Leading and developing the Data Engineering team across Poland and Denmark (8 colleagues)
Owning the engineering backbone of the data platform (ingestion, transformation, orchestration, observability)
Ensuring stable, predictable, and cost-efficient operation of data pipelines
Driving engineering standards and best practices (CI/CD, testing, documentation)
Implementing and enforcing governance on data quality, security, and cost
Supporting a data mesh model by enabling domains to build and operate their own data products
Working closely with Data Science and AI initiatives to ensure the platform supports current and future use cases
Translate strategy into concrete engineering roadmaps and executable delivery plans
Ensure compliance with VELUX policies on data, privacy, security, and responsible AI
Success in the role is reflected in stable operations, consistent engineering quality, and the ability to scale the platform and its usage across domains and AI initiatives
Our requirements:
Proven experience leading senior data engineering teams in a complex enterprise environment
Strong hands-on background in modern data platforms (e.g. cloud data warehouses, transformation frameworks, CI/CD) and programming experience (e.g. Python, SQL)
Experience scaling from bespoke solutions to platform-based, reusable patterns
Solid understanding of data governance, security, and cost management at scale
Track record of working effectively across functions and cultures
Fluent English skills, additional language skills in Polish or Danish is beneficial
