Shape the future of grassroots sports through the power of data

Spond is a product-driven consumer tech company that simplifies life for sports teams, clubs, and volunteers. Every month, over 4 million active users around the world rely on our platform to communicate, coordinate events, and manage payments within their teams and clubs. In Norway, more than one in five people use Spond, and we aim to replicate this success globally.

That scale generates a lot of data and raises important questions: how do teams and clubs form and grow, how do people engage with events and payments, what keeps them active, and what drives them away? We have a data team, a warehouse (Databricks), pipelines, and a BI tool (Omni) in place. But we’re still early in turning that data into something the whole organization uses consistently and confidently.

We’re looking for a Head of Data who wants to build. You’ll lead and scale a small team (one data engineer and two analysts) and have real influence over the infrastructure, tooling, and ways of working that will define how Spond uses data both internally and with partners for years to come. That means a real opportunity to get into building yourself.

A taste a what you’d work on in the near future and longer term

  • Ensure our KPIs provide dependable insights: key metrics currently drift between sources, and product and leadership teams don't always trust the numbers they're looking at.

  • Ship an A/B testing framework that product teams can actually use. Right now, running is time-consuming and effortful. We want this to be self-serve.

  • Scale our prototype external data product: a report for national governing bodies (NGBs) that gives federations real insights into activity and participation data in their sports.

  • Set and drive data strategy. Define how Spond uses data to make decisions and build products - and get the rest of the organization on board.

  • Build and develop the team. We have one data engineer and one (soon two) analysts. You'll lead them day-to-day, help them grow, and decide when and who to hire next.

  • Lead the data platform. Build a robust self‑service architecture spanning pipelines, the warehouse, data quality, governance, and compliance.

  • Embed data in product development. Work with product teams to establish shared metrics, analyst workflows, and an experimentation framework they can actually use without constant help from data.

  • Build and implement the case for machine learning and AI tooling resulting in material business impact.

Who are you?

You’ve built and scaled data platforms and teams before. You’re comfortable collaborating with engineers on architectural decisions, leading data initiatives, and aligning with business stakeholders to drive impact.

You highly likely have a background in data engineering or analytics engineering, and you've spent enough time close to a product that you understand how data teams and product teams should work together.

You bring

  • Proven experience scaling data teams, with a track record of being both strategic and operational in scale-up environments.

  • You have hands-on experience with modern data stack tooling (dbt or dlt), a cloud warehouse (Databricks or similar), and orchestration.

  • Strategic thinking to align data initiatives with overarching business goals.

  • Ability to translate insights into actionable product and business decisions.

  • Effective communication skills to make complex data topics accessible and actionable across different disciplines in the company.
