ABOUT THE ROLE
Our client, a reputable organisation operating within the NGO, healthcare and oncology sector, is seeking an experienced and accomplished Head of Clinical Services to provide strategic, clinical and operational leadership across its healthcare services.
The successful candidate will be responsible for overseeing the delivery of safe, high-quality and patient-centred clinical care, while ensuring compliance with professional, ethical and regulatory standards. The role will provide leadership to multidisciplinary clinical teams, strengthen clinical governance, improve patient outcomes and drive continuous improvement across all areas of clinical service delivery.
The ideal candidate must be a highly experienced medical professional with strong clinical leadership, hospital management and people management capabilities, preferably with exposure to oncology or other specialised healthcare services.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Clinical Leadership & Service Delivery
Provide strategic and operational leadership for all clinical services within the organisation.
Oversee the planning, coordination and delivery of safe, effective, evidence-based and patient-centred healthcare services.
Ensure high standards of clinical practice across all departments and service areas.
Develop and implement strategies to improve clinical outcomes, patient experience and service quality.
Provide clinical leadership and professional guidance to doctors, nurses, allied health professionals and other clinical personnel.
Ensure appropriate coordination and collaboration across multidisciplinary clinical teams.
Monitor clinical workloads, service capacity and staffing requirements to support efficient service delivery.
Support the development and expansion of clinical services in line with organisational objectives and community healthcare needs.
Participate in complex clinical decision-making and provide expert guidance where required.
Clinical Governance, Quality & Patient Safety
Establish, implement and maintain effective clinical governance frameworks.
Lead initiatives focused on quality improvement, patient safety and clinical excellence.
Develop and monitor clinical policies, protocols, guidelines and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
Ensure clinical services are delivered in accordance with approved professional standards and best practices.
Monitor clinical performance indicators and use data to identify improvement opportunities.
Lead clinical audits, quality reviews and performance improvement initiatives.
Investigate clinical incidents, adverse events, near misses and patient complaints, ensuring appropriate corrective and preventive actions are implemented.
Promote a culture of patient safety, accountability, learning and continuous improvement.
Ensure appropriate systems are in place for clinical risk identification, escalation and management.
Regulatory Compliance & Professional Standards
Ensure compliance with all applicable healthcare laws, regulations, professional standards and ethical requirements.
Maintain compliance with the requirements of the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN) and other relevant regulatory and professional bodies.
Ensure all clinical personnel maintain valid professional licences, registrations and required certifications.
Oversee compliance with healthcare quality, safety, infection prevention and control standards.
Support organisational readiness for regulatory inspections, accreditation processes and external audits.
Ensure accurate clinical documentation, patient records and medical reporting in accordance with applicable standards and confidentiality requirements.
Maintain awareness of changes in healthcare regulations, clinical standards and industry best practices.
Team Leadership & Workforce Management
Provide leadership, supervision and performance oversight for clinical teams.
Support the recruitment, onboarding, development and retention of qualified clinical professionals.
Establish clear roles, responsibilities, performance expectations and accountability structures.
Conduct performance reviews and provide coaching, mentoring and professional development support.
Identify clinical training needs and coordinate relevant learning and development programmes.
Foster a collaborative, respectful and high-performing multidisciplinary work environment.
Support workforce planning and ensure appropriate staffing levels across clinical services.
Address clinical workforce challenges, professional conflicts and performance concerns in collaboration with management and HR.
Oncology & Specialised Healthcare Services
Support the development and delivery of specialised healthcare services, including oncology-related programmes where applicable.
Ensure appropriate clinical pathways, referral systems and multidisciplinary care coordination for patients.
Work closely with specialists and healthcare partners to improve access to quality specialised care.
Support the development of clinical programmes that improve early detection, diagnosis, treatment, patient support and continuity of care.
Ensure that clinical services align with evidence-based practices and emerging developments in oncology and healthcare.
Strategic Planning & Service Development
Contribute to the organisation's overall healthcare strategy and long-term clinical development plans.
Identify opportunities for service improvement, programme expansion and clinical innovation.
Develop recommendations for improving operational efficiency, service quality and patient outcomes.
Support the introduction of new clinical services, programmes and treatment pathways.
Participate in strategic planning, budgeting and resource allocation for clinical services.
Provide management with professional advice on clinical priorities, healthcare trends and emerging risks.
Develop and implement initiatives that support the organisation's mission and public health objectives.
Monitoring, Reporting & Data Management
Develop and monitor key clinical performance indicators and service delivery metrics.
Prepare periodic clinical, quality and performance reports for executive management and relevant stakeholders.
Analyse clinical data to identify trends, gaps and opportunities for improvement.
Ensure accurate and timely documentation of clinical activities, outcomes and service performance.
Present findings and recommendations to management and relevant governance structures.
Support the use of data and evidence in clinical decision-making and programme development.
Stakeholder & Partnership Management
Build and maintain productive relationships with healthcare professionals, specialists, hospitals, regulatory bodies and relevant stakeholders.
Represent the organisation at approved professional meetings, conferences and healthcare forums.
Support partnerships with healthcare institutions, research organisations, government agencies and development partners.
Collaborate with external stakeholders to improve access to specialised healthcare services.
Promote the organisation's reputation for clinical excellence, ethical practice and patient-centred care.
QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE
The successful candidate must possess:
A Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS/MBChB) degree from a recognised institution.
A valid and current Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN) practising licence
A recognised postgraduate fellowship, preferably FWACP or FMCP, in a relevant medical specialty.
A minimum of 8–10 years of post-qualification clinical experience
Demonstrable experience in a senior clinical leadership, medical management or hospital management role.
Experience supervising multidisciplinary clinical teams.
Strong knowledge of clinical governance, quality assurance, patient safety and healthcare regulations.
Experience in hospital, specialised healthcare, oncology or NGO healthcare environments will be an added advantage.
Proven experience in developing and implementing clinical policies, protocols and quality improvement initiatives.
Experience managing clinical audits, compliance reviews and healthcare service improvement programmes.
A postgraduate qualification or certification in healthcare management, hospital administration, public health or a related field will be an added advantage.
