The City of Johnson City is currently accepting applications for a Head Lifeguard with Parks and Recreation. This position is located in the Parks and Recreation Department, Recreation Services Division, which plans, promotes and provides recreation aquatic programs for the public. This position performs supervisory and technical work managing and supervising the operations of a municipal swimming pool(s). Work is performed under the Aquatics Supervisor. Supervision is exercised over staff for the purpose of aiding the Aquatics Supervisor to carry out the objectives of the section and to direct operation of the section in the absence of the supervisor; and does related work as required or assigned. An employee in this class is responsible for supervising the City swimming pools to include life guarding, instructing/teaching, first aid, administrative duties, pool maintenance and observation for the purpose of a safe workplace and recreation use facility. The work includes the maintenance and care of the facilities, as well as the supervision of lifeguards. The Head Lifeguard performs difficult protective services associated/related to pool rescues. Supervision is exercised over lifeguards and instructors under the regular supervision of the Aquatics Coordinator.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Thorough knowledge of community swimming pool operations including safety practices and procedures, pool maintenance, life guarding training and operational functions, and general facility maintenance; thorough knowledge of pool chemistry; thorough knowledge of first-aid practices related to water sports and pool activities; ability to train subordinates in proper life guarding techniques and methods; ability to enforce safety rules and regulations and maintain discipline; ability to supervise the work of subordinates; ability to work with toxic chemicals safely; ability to prepare and maintain records; ability to perform water rescue functions; ability to pass annual re-certification testing and ability to maintain current certifications in minimum job requirements (CPR, first-aid, life guarding, water safety instructor, and life guarding instructor certification); and the ability to use computer programs for reports and spreadsheets.
Acceptable Experience and Training: Preferably a graduate from a college with a Bachelor's degree in recreation, sports management, facility operations or a related field. Any combination of education and experience of a minimum of five [5] years of progressive supervisory experience or considerable experience as a lifeguard at a community swimming facility; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the job requirements as a Head Lifeguard and supervising staff is acceptable.
