Job Goal
To provide leadership, supervision, instruction, and organization for the high school baseball program while promoting student achievement, sportsmanship, teamwork, discipline, character development, and compliance with all school, county, conference, and West Virginia Secondary School Activities Commission requirements.
Minimum Qualifications
- Must possess a high school diploma or GED.
- Must meet all coaching certification and authorization requirements established by the West Virginia Department of Education, the West Virginia Secondary School Activities Commission, and Boone County Schools.
- Must successfully complete all required criminal background checks and employment screenings.
- Must maintain current CPR and AED certification.
- Must complete all required coaching, concussion, sudden cardiac arrest, heat illness, sportsmanship, and student-safety training.
- Must demonstrate knowledge of baseball fundamentals, rules, strategies, conditioning, player development, and injury-prevention practices.
- Must possess effective organizational, communication, leadership, and interpersonal skills.
- Must be able to work cooperatively with students, parents, employees, administrators, officials, and members of the community.
- Previous successful coaching and/or playing experience in baseball is preferred.
- Must be physically and emotionally capable of performing the essential duties of the position.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Program Leadership
- Provide leadership and direction for the high school baseball program.
- Develop and maintain a program that promotes academic achievement, athletic development, teamwork, sportsmanship, discipline, and character.
- Establish clear expectations for student-athlete attendance, conduct, effort, academic performance, and participation.
- Develop short-term and long-term goals for the baseball program.
- Promote consistency and cooperation among varsity, junior varsity, middle school, and youth baseball programs when appropriate.
- Serve as a positive role model for student-athletes and represent Boone County Schools professionally.
- Encourage participation in the baseball program and promote positive relationships with students, parents, school employees, and the community.
Coaching and Instruction
- Plan and conduct organized, purposeful, and developmentally appropriate practices.
- Teach baseball fundamentals, including hitting, pitching, fielding, throwing, base running, defensive positioning, and game strategy.
- Evaluate student-athletes fairly and assign positions and playing time based on ability, effort, conduct, attendance, team needs, and other appropriate factors.
- Provide instruction that supports the development of individual and team skills.
- Prepare the team for competition through effective practice planning, conditioning, scouting, and game preparation.
- Develop appropriate offensive, defensive, pitching, and base-running strategies.
- Provide constructive feedback and encourage continuous student-athlete improvement.
- Supervise assistant coaches and clearly communicate their duties and responsibilities.
- Ensure that all coaches use approved instructional, conditioning, and safety practices.
Student-Athlete Supervision and Safety
- Maintain direct supervision of student-athletes during practices, games, meetings, travel, locker-room activities, and other team functions.
- Maintain a safe, orderly, respectful, and positive environment.
- Follow established procedures for preventing and responding to injuries, concussions, heat-related illnesses, sudden cardiac arrest, severe weather, and other emergencies.
- Ensure that emergency contact information, physical examinations, eligibility documentation, and required medical forms are completed before student participation.
- Immediately report injuries, suspected abuse or neglect, bullying, harassment, hazing, discrimination, or other safety concerns to the appropriate administrator.
- Never permit or encourage hazing, humiliation, intimidation, retaliation, or inappropriate initiation activities.
- Ensure that student-athletes have appropriate access to water, rest periods, emergency care, and safe equipment.
- Follow all return-to-play requirements and the recommendations of qualified medical personnel.
- Maintain appropriate professional boundaries with all student-athletes.
- Ensure that no student-athlete is left unsupervised following practices, games, or team activities.
Compliance and Eligibility
- Follow all applicable federal and state laws, West Virginia Board of Education policies, WVSSAC rules, Boone County Board of Education policies, conference requirements, and school procedures.
- Monitor student-athlete academic eligibility, attendance, conduct, and other participation requirements.
- Verify that all student-athletes are properly enrolled, eligible, and approved before participating.
- Attend required county, conference, WVSSAC, athletic department, and school meetings.
- Ensure that all coaching staff members maintain required certifications and complete mandatory training.
- Follow all rules regarding practice dates, conditioning periods, game limitations, out-of-season activities, recruiting, and student participation.
- Maintain accurate records and submit required reports, rosters, schedules, eligibility information, inventories, and documentation by established deadlines.
- Cooperate with administrators during investigations, eligibility reviews, and program evaluations.
Scheduling, Travel, and Game Management
- Work with the principal and athletic director to develop practice, game, transportation, and facility schedules.
- Communicate schedules and changes promptly to student-athletes, parents, assistant coaches, and appropriate school personnel.
- Prepare student-athletes for safe and appropriate travel to and from athletic events.
- Supervise student-athletes while traveling and ensure appropriate behavior on buses, in restaurants, at lodging facilities, and at opposing schools.
- Work cooperatively with game officials, opposing coaches, athletic directors, and event personnel.
- Assist with field preparation, game-day organization, and post-game responsibilities.
- Ensure that dugouts, locker rooms, fields, buses, and other facilities are left clean and orderly.
- Demonstrate appropriate conduct toward officials and require student-athletes and assistant coaches to do the same.
Equipment, Facilities, and Budget
- Maintain an accurate inventory of uniforms, equipment, supplies, and other program property.
- Ensure that baseball equipment is properly fitted, maintained, stored, and used.
- Inspect the baseball field, batting cages, dugouts, pitching areas, and equipment for potential safety hazards.
- Immediately report unsafe conditions, damaged equipment, and needed repairs to the athletic director or building principal.
- Assist with ordering equipment, uniforms, and supplies within the approved athletic budget.
- Follow all purchasing, fundraising, accounting, and financial procedures established by Boone County Schools.
- Ensure that school funds, booster funds, donations, and fundraising proceeds are handled in accordance with Board policy.
- Accept responsibility for school-issued keys, equipment, facilities, and property.
Communication and Public Relations
- Maintain professional and timely communication with student-athletes, parents, administrators, employees, and the community.
- Conduct a preseason parent and student-athlete meeting to review expectations, schedules, rules, safety procedures, and communication protocols.
- Address concerns professionally and follow the appropriate chain of command.
- Promote the baseball program through positive school and community relationships.
- Provide accurate information to approved media representatives and school communication platforms when authorized.
- Protect confidential student information and comply with all applicable privacy requirements.
- Ensure that team social-media accounts and electronic communications comply with Boone County Schools policies and professional standards.
Professional Responsibilities
- Maintain regular and punctual attendance at all required practices, games, meetings, and team activities.
- Demonstrate professionalism, integrity, fairness, and ethical conduct.
- Treat student-athletes, parents, officials, employees, and community members with dignity and respect.
- Refrain from the use of profanity, intimidation, threats, inappropriate physical contact, or demeaning language.
- Maintain appropriate dress and professional appearance during practices, games, meetings, and school activities.
- Support the decisions and expectations of the building principal, athletic director, superintendent, and Boone County Board of Education.
- Participate in professional development and remain knowledgeable about current baseball rules, strategies, safety standards, and coaching practices.
- Perform other duties related to the baseball program as assigned by the principal, athletic director, or superintendent.
Physical Requirements
The employee must be able to:
- Stand and walk for extended periods.
- Run, bend, stoop, kneel, reach, throw, catch, and demonstrate baseball skills.
- Lift, carry, push, or pull baseball equipment, supplies, and field-maintenance materials.
- Work outdoors in varying temperatures and weather conditions.
- Observe student-athlete performance and respond quickly to safety or emergency situations.
- Communicate effectively in noisy athletic environments.
- Travel with the team and work evenings, weekends, holidays, and extended hours as required by the athletic schedule.
- Perform the essential duties of the position with or without reasonable accommodation.
Work Environment
The employee will work primarily in outdoor athletic facilities, school buildings, locker rooms, buses, and other locations associated with practices, games, tournaments, and team activities. The position may involve exposure to extreme temperatures, inclement weather, dust, athletic equipment, loud noise, physical activity, and the potential for athletic injuries.
Evaluation
Performance shall be evaluated by the building principal and/or athletic director in accordance with Boone County Board of Education policies and procedures. Continued appointment to this extra-curricular assignment shall be based upon satisfactory performance, compliance with applicable requirements, and the needs of Boone County Schools.

- Salary: According to the Boone County Schools Extra-Curricular Salary Schedule
- Work Schedule: Practices, games, tournaments, meetings, conditioning sessions, and other duties as established by the principal, athletic director, Boone County Schools, and the WVSSAC
- Employment Status: This assignment does not create a continuing contract or expectation of appointment for future seasons.
