Job Description
Job Title: Head Custodian
Supervise and lead the custodial team to maintain safe, clean, and well-functioning district facilities that support a positive learning environment for students and staff.
Key Responsibilities
- Facility Management & Safety
- Open buildings on schedule and conduct daily pre-arrival inspections of hallways, cafeterias, gymnasiums, and grounds to address safety hazards.
- Conduct routine preventive maintenance and basic repairs (HVAC, plumbing, electrical).
- Oversee regular inspections of playgrounds, bleachers, and high-traffic areas to minimize liability and property risks.
- Team Leadership & Administration
- Organize, schedule, direct, and evaluate the work of the custodial staff.
- Support continuous professional development and safety training for the custodial team.
- Maintain up-to-date Safety Data Sheets (SDS) in compliance with modern OSHA guidelines and ensure proper chemical handling.
- Inventory & Purchasing
- Maintain an ongoing inventory of custodial equipment, materials, and supplies.
- Assist in sourcing, selecting, and requisitioning necessary building supplies.
- General Operations
- Perform hands-on cleaning and janitorial duties as needed.
- Collaborate effectively with school staff, administrators, and external contractors.
- Perform other duties as assigned by district leadership.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED equivalent.
- Proven experience in facility maintenance and custodial supervision.
- Working knowledge of commercial cleaning equipment, building systems (HVAC, plumbing, electrical), and safety protocols.
- Ability to meet physical demands, including lifting 50+ lbs, standing, crawling, and climbing as needed.
- Strong communication, leadership, and organization skills.
Terms of Employment & Evaluation
Employment terms are defined by the current collective bargaining agreement and individual employment contract. Performance is evaluated annually per Board of Education policy.
