Head Cheer Coach – Middle School Program

Madison Middle School

Position Title: Head Cheer Coach – Middle School Program
Location: Madison Middle School
Reports To: Principal and Athletic Director
Compensation: Supplemental Stipend (as approved by Boone County Schools salary schedule)

The Head Cheer Coach for the Middle School Program is responsible for leading, organizing, and supervising the middle school cheerleading program at Madison Middle School. The coach will promote school spirit, develop student-athletes' cheer skills, and ensure a safe, positive, and structured environment that supports both athletic and academic success.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Organize, schedule, and conduct tryouts, practices, games, and performances for the middle school cheer program.
  • Teach cheerleading fundamentals, motions, chants, stunts, routines, and safety techniques appropriate for middle school athletes.
  • Ensure all activities are conducted in accordance with Boone County Schools policies, West Virginia Secondary School Activities Commission (WVSSAC) guidelines, and safety regulations.
  • Supervise and ensure the safety of all cheer participants during practices, games, and travel events.
  • Foster teamwork, sportsmanship, leadership, and positive school spirit.
  • Communicate effectively with students, parents, staff, and administration regarding schedules, expectations, and program requirements.
  • Coordinate with athletic staff and administration to support school and athletic events.
  • Manage uniforms, equipment, and program inventory as approved.
  • Assist with planning and oversight of cheer-related fundraising activities when applicable.
  • Ensure proper academic and behavioral expectations are maintained for all participants.
  • Maintain required documentation including rosters, eligibility records, and emergency information.
  • Perform other duties related to the cheer program as assigned by administration.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent required; bachelor's degree preferred.
  • Prior experience in cheerleading, coaching, or related athletic/dance programs strongly preferred.
  • Knowledge of cheerleading safety standards and basic stunt progression required or willingness to obtain training.
  • Strong leadership, organizational, and communication skills.
  • Ability to work effectively with middle school students, parents, staff, and community members.
  • Must meet all Boone County Schools and WVSSAC requirements, including background checks and mandatory training.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to demonstrate and instruct cheer motions, chants, and basic stunts.
  • Ability to stand, move, and supervise for extended periods.
  • Ability to attend games, practices, and travel events as required.

Terms of Employment

  • Seasonal supplemental coaching position.
  • Compensation paid in accordance with Boone County Schools approved stipend schedule.
  • Employment is contingent upon board approval and compliance with all county, state, and federal requirements.

Evaluation

Performance will be evaluated annually by the Principal and Athletic Director in accordance with Boone County Schools policies.
