The Head Cheer Coach at the Broad Ripple campus provides leadership and strategic direction for the cheer leading program. This role is responsible for fostering a positive, inclusive, and high-energy environment that promotes school spirit while prioritizing student safety and personal growth. The Coach will develop the athletic skills of team members, manage game-day performances, and ensure the program aligns with PPHS’s mission and core values.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Program Leadership & Skill Development

  • Plan and facilitate regular practice sessions focused on stunting, tumbling, jumps, and choreography.
  • Direct performances at home basketball games and other school-sanctioned athletic events.
  • Coordinate school spirit initiatives, including pep rallies and community events at the Broad Ripple campus.
  • Establish clear team rules, expectations, and tryout criteria in collaboration with the Athletic Director.

Student Mentorship & Support

  • Monitor the academic progress of student-athletes and provide support to ensure they meet eligibility requirements.
  • Promote the PPHS core value of "Nurturing Student Genius" by encouraging leadership, discipline, and teamwork.
  • Serve as a positive role model, fostering a culture of "Doing the Right Thing" and sportsmanship.

Operations & Safety

  • Ensure all stunting and athletic activities comply with IHSAA (or relevant governing body) safety standards and school policies.
  • Maintain an accurate inventory of uniforms and equipment.
  • Manage the team budget and coordinate any necessary fundraising activities.
  • Coordinate transportation for away games or off-campus events as required.

Communication & Stakeholder Engagement

  • Maintain regular, professional communication with student-athletes and their families regarding schedules, expectations, and events.
  • Collaborate with the Athletic Director, Person, and other campus staff to ensure program alignment with school goals.
  • Represent the PPHS cheer program at community engagements and network-wide athletic meetings.

Requirements

Education

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required.
  • Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree preferred.

Experience

  • Minimum of two years of cheer leading coaching experience at the middle school, high school, or collegiate level.
  • Demonstrated experience in stunt safety and choreography.
  • Experience working in a K-12 school or student-centered environment preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Strong knowledge of cheer leading fundamentals, safety protocols, and competitive standards.
  • Ability to motivate and lead a diverse group of high school students.
  • Excellent organizational and time-management skills to balance practices, games, and administrative tasks.
  • Commitment to PPHS’s mission and student-centered approach.
  • Current CPR/AED and First Aid certification (or willingness to obtain prior to the start of the season).
  • Completion of NFHS Coaching courses as required by school policy.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to stand, move, and demonstrate cheer movements for extended periods.
  • Ability to lift or spot student-athletes during stunting activities.
  • Regular evening and occasional weekend work for games and events.

Employment Status

Employment at Purdue Polytechnic High Schools is at will. Employment may be terminated at any time, with or without cause or notice, by either the employee or PPHS, subject to applicable law.
