Section Head – Painting & Blasting (DGM)
Department: Production / Shipbuilding Operations
Location: Pipavav, Gujarat
Job Purpose
Lead all blasting, surface preparation, painting, coating, and preservation activities for shipbuilding and ship repair projects, ensuring compliance with quality, safety, environmental, and project requirements while achieving production targets.
Key Responsibilities
Operations & Production
Plan, schedule, and manage blasting and painting activities to meet project timelines.
Allocate manpower, equipment, materials, and subcontractors effectively.
Drive productivity, quality improvements, and cost optimization initiatives.
Coordinate with fabrication, outfitting, QA/QC, planning, and project teams.
Technical & Quality Management
Ensure compliance with SSPC, ISO 12944, NACE/AMPP, IMO, and classification society standards.
Supervise surface preparation (Sa 2, Sa 2.5, Sa 3), coating application, and DFT compliance.
Conduct inspections including surface profile checks, holiday testing, adhesion testing, and coating assessments.
Investigate coating failures and implement corrective actions.
Health, Safety & Environment
Ensure safe execution of blasting and painting operations, including confined space work.
Enforce PPE, permit-to-work systems, and environmental compliance.
Monitor ambient conditions such as humidity, dew point, and steel temperature.
Conduct safety audits and risk assessments.
Resource & Cost Management
Manage departmental budgets, equipment utilization, and paint inventory.
Minimize wastage and control consumable costs.
Oversee maintenance of blasting and painting equipment.
Develop workforce capabilities through training and certification programs.
Stakeholder Management
Liaise with clients, classification societies, consultants, and paint manufacturers.
Support procurement, commercial, and project teams in technical evaluations and material selection.
Key KPIs
On-time completion of blasting and painting activities.
Rework and paint repair percentage.
Productivity per man-hour.
Coating quality acceptance rate.
HSE performance.
Budget adherence and equipment utilization.
Qualifications
Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical, Marine, Production Engineering, or related field.
Diploma in Paint Technology preferred.
NACE/AMPP Coating Inspector Level 2 preferred.
Experience
16+ years in shipbuilding, offshore fabrication, marine repair, or heavy industrial painting.
6–10 years in a leadership role managing large-scale blasting and painting operations.
Experience with commercial vessels, naval ships, offshore structures, or marine fabrication projects.
Key Skills
Marine coating systems and corrosion protection.
Surface preparation standards (Sa 2, Sa 2.5, Sa 3).
Airless spray painting technologies.
QA/QC for marine coatings.
Production planning, resource management, and cost control.
Strong leadership, problem-solving, and stakeholder management skills.
Mandatory Certifications
NACE Level 2 Coating Inspector or FROSIO Level 3.
Painting Supervisor Certification.
