Job Description

The Hazardous Waste Coordinator is an in-person position responsible for coordinating the university’s hazardous, universal, and biohazardous waste management programs in compliance with federal, state, and local environmental regulations. The position supports the safe collection, storage, transportation, disposal, and documentation of regulated wastes generated across campus laboratories and facilities while maintaining effective communication and collaboration with faculty, staff, students, and Environmental Health and Safety personnel.

This role administers hazardous waste training and recordkeeping programs, oversees central and satellite accumulation areas, conducts inspections and audits, and responds to hazardous material incidents and emergencies. The position also develops and implements waste management plans, contingency procedures, and best management practices to support environmental compliance and campus safety. This position is considered essential staff and may be required to respond in person during campus emergencies or curtailment events.

Duties/Responsibilities

Hazardous Waste Program Administration (60%)

  • Coordinate activities related to the collection, processing, storage, transportation, recycling, and disposal of hazardous, universal, and biohazardous wastes generated by university operations.

  • Maintain the central hazardous waste accumulation facility and support proper management of satellite accumulation areas.

  • Make hazardous waste determinations for materials removed from laboratories and other waste generation sites.

  • Prepare hazardous waste manifests, regulatory reports, and supporting environmental compliance documentation.

  • Maintain databases and electronic records related to waste generation, disposal, and training activities.

Training, Compliance, and Inspections (20%)

  • Develop, coordinate, and deliver hazardous and universal waste management training for faculty, staff, and students.

  • Maintain training records and refresher training schedules.

  • Conduct inspections of central and satellite waste accumulation areas and document inspection findings.

  • Support internal and third-party environmental compliance audits and assist with corrective actions as needed.

  • Remain current on applicable environmental regulations, standards, and best practices.

Emergency Response and Preparedness (5%)

  • Coordinate response activities for hazardous material incidents and chemical emergencies across university facilities.

  • Develop and revise hazardous waste management plans, contingency plans, waste minimization plans, and spill response procedures.

  • Recommend and implement best management practices for hazardous material handling and waste accumulation areas.

  • Review safety plans and collaborate with Environmental Health and Safety staff regarding facility safety concerns.

Collaboration and Supervision (15%)

  • Advise faculty, staff, and students on proper waste management procedures and regulatory compliance requirements.

  • Foster cooperative working relationships with university departments and external waste management vendors and agencies.

  • Supervise student employees, interns, and hourly staff as assigned.

  • Maintain required professional certifications and support continuous improvement of environmental health and safety programs.

Requirements

Minimum Acceptable Education & Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Health and Safety, Environmental Science, Chemistry, or a related discipline.

  • Two years of experience in environmental health and safety, hazardous waste management, or a related field.

  • Relevant additional experience may substitute for required education in accordance with university equivalency guidelines.

Required Licenses & Certifications:

  • Ability to obtain and maintain applicable professional certifications required by the State of New Hampshire including NHDES Hazardous Waste Coordinator Certification.

  • Valid driver’s license required.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Knowledge of hazardous waste regulations and environmental compliance requirements, including hazardous and universal waste management standards.

  • Ability to communicate environmental health and safety requirements effectively to faculty, staff, and students.

  • Strong organizational, recordkeeping, and documentation skills.

  • Ability to develop and deliver technical training programs.

  • Ability to prioritize and coordinate multiple activities and regulatory deadlines.

  • Computer proficiency and ability to utilize environmental management and recordkeeping systems.

  • Ability to respond in-person to campus locations requiring environmental health and safety services.

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with a diverse campus community.

Other Requirements:

  • Ability to wear and use appropriate personal protective equipment as required.

  • Ability to perform the physical duties associated with hazardous waste handling and emergency response activities.

  • Ability to respond in person to campus emergencies and environmental incidents.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in Environmental Health and Safety or a related discipline.

  • Experience working in a higher education, laboratory, research, or institutional environment.

  • Professional certification related to hazardous materials management, environmental compliance, or occupational safety.

Compensation Pay Range:

$57,590.00 - $102,850.00
