Job Description

General Position Summary & Responsibilities

The Haul Truck Operator (Site/Yard) operates haul trucks, tractor-trailer combinations, or other heavy vehicles to move scrap, materials, and equipment within Company facilities and other designated private property locations across Canada. This role is primarily intended for private-site operation and may not involve regular driving on public roads unless otherwise specified by location.

This position operates under flexible parameters. The primary goal of this position is to achieve excellence in all facets of the role by moving materials safely, efficiently, and in accordance with site procedures and Company expectations. Providing the highest quality product safely, effectively, and efficiently reduces incidents and errors and supports operational performance.

Essential Functions

Environmental and Health & Safety (H&S)

  • Follows Company safety standards, site rules, and safe work procedures.
  • Operates equipment in accordance with applicable Canadian occupational health and safety regulations.
  • Provides a safe environment for employees, contractors, customers, and visitors by operating equipment defensively and reporting hazards promptly.

Operational Performance & Best Business Practices

  • Move scrap, freight, and materials to and from production areas, stockpiles, loading areas, and processing locations within the yard or other designated private property locations using assigned equipment as trained and authorized.
  • Maneuver equipment into loading and unloading positions while following established site traffic controls, safe work procedures, and spotter directions where used.
  • Inspect loads and secure materials for movement within the facility using approved securement methods and devices appropriate to the task and equipment.
  • Perform pre-operational and post-operational inspections of assigned vehicles and equipment in accordance with Company procedures and manufacturer guidance, where applicable.
  • Complete required inspection forms, equipment checklists, and maintenance or repair reports accurately and on time in accordance with Company procedures.
  • Provide backup or assistance throughout the yard as needed or assigned, including supporting safe traffic flow and material movement.

Equipment & Maintenance

  • Report all vehicle or equipment defects, incidents, near misses, unsafe conditions, or damages to the appropriate supervisor immediately, and remove equipment from service when required by company procedure.

Special Projects

  • Performs special projects or other duties as needed or assigned.

Internal Control Responsibilities

Supports the Company’s Internal Control process which includes understanding, communicating, and complying with defined internal controls as well as suggesting and making modifications to the policies, procedures, and controls to better relate to the business.

Communicates upward problems in operations, noncompliance with the code of conduct, or other policy violations or illegal actions.

Job Conditions

This position is regularly exposed to all weather conditions. Physical hazards such as noise, fumes, and dirt are present due to the equipment, machinery, and scrap as would be found throughout the scrap yard. Safety shoes, hearing protection, respirators, face shields, and additional personal protective equipment as needed, must be worn to eliminate the risks associated with these hazards. Travel is not required for this position.

Handling multiple issues regarding safety and maintenance increases pressure. Workload may be unpredictable, and pressure can be substantial during peak times. Critical deadlines require considerable adaptability. Disturbances of workflow and/or irregularities in work schedule are expected and occur on an intermittent basis. Extra hours may be required, sometimes on weekends, weekdays, and holidays.

Training, evaluation, and authorization to operate assigned equipment will be provided or required in accordance with Company procedures and applicable requirements.

Physical Activities Required to Perform Essential Functions

Ability to: sit constantly; stand and walk frequently on uneven ground and throughout the yard; lift and carry up to 50 pounds consistently; push and pull occasionally when moving materials; crouch or bend at the knees consistently to move or access materials or equipment; stoop or bend at the waist consistently to move materials; reach at arm’s length and overhead frequently; twist and turn at the neck and trunk continually; climb occasionally when obtaining items; use manual dexterity continuously to handle, grasp, and manipulate controls and equipment; maintain arm-hand steadiness for precision work; communicate by speech and hearing continually; and maintain near and far visual acuity for safe vehicle and equipment operation. Mental dexterity is required to work independently while demonstrating attention to detail and continuous awareness in an active yard environment.

Qualifications

  • Experience safely operating heavy trucks, haul trucks, tractor/trailer combinations, or similar mobile equipment in an industrial, construction, recycling, manufacturing, or yard environment.
  • High school diploma or GED preferred; equivalent combination of education, training, and work experience may be considered.
  • Must be able to complete inspections, communicate effectively with spotters and co-workers, and work safely around pedestrians and moving equipment.
