Job Location: Field Shop Permian Delaware - Carlsbad, NM 88220Overview:

The H2S Specialist Technician is responsible for safely supporting compressor maintenance and repair work in locations where hydrogen sulfide (H2S) is present or may be present. This role combines mechanical compressor experience with specialized H2S safety knowledge, respiratory protection training, and emergency response readiness.

The H2S Specialist Technician maintains, operates, repairs, and performs preventive maintenance on natural gas engine-driven and electric-driven compressor packages, including Flogistix rental fleet equipment and customer-owned compressors as assigned. The technician is expected to work with limited supervision based on skill level and to follow all applicable safety, operating, and maintenance procedures.

In H2S environments, this position is authorized to assess, isolate, clear, and monitor identified locations using approved respiratory protection and gas detection equipment. The role includes remaining on location during work as an observer and rescue resource when required.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assess H2S work areas, identify hazards, and determine routes of egress.
  • Restrict access to H2S work areas to essential personnel only.
  • Use approved sample pumps, indicator tubes, and gas monitors to evaluate H2S levels before and during work.
  • Perform initial opening of gas-containing components when required and verify the area is below the applicable action level before work begins.
  • Isolate equipment, relieve pressure, verify the area is clear of H2S, and apply Lock-Out/Tag-Out (LOTO) procedures.
  • Confirm H2S levels are 10 ppm or less before work proceeds, unless otherwise authorized by procedure.
  • Remain on location during work as an observer and rescue resource, maintaining awareness of wind direction and changing conditions.
  • Ensure safe work procedures are followed throughout the job.
  • Document H2S sample results in the work order notes, including date, time, location, asset number, ppm levels, and technician name.
  • Stop work and initiate Brake for Safety if H2S levels exceed 100 ppm at a location not identified as H2S, and notify the supervisor and EHS representative immediately.
  • Other duties as assigned.

QualificationsQualifications

Required

  • PEC SafeLand or equivalent certification.
  • PEC H2S Clear Certification.
  • Flogistix H2S eLearning and Hazardous Gas Overview.
  • H2S action level review and Emergency Action Plan/JSA training.
  • Respiratory equipment training and hands-on familiarization.
  • Medical clearance, pulmonary function testing, and quantitative respirator fit testing.
  • Ability to maintain a clean-shaven face as required for respiratory protection.
  • Low angle rescue training.
  • Ability to use issued SCBA equipment and gas monitoring equipment.
  • Initial and annual training as required.

Work Environment

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts; automated equipment, airborne particles; risk of electrical shock and moving fork trucks. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate; however, hearing protection is required in designated areas where signage indicates it is mandatory. Daily travel in the field up to 75% of the time or more.
