General Summary:

Job Profile Summary: This position reports into the Underwriting Manager or Director for the products they underwrite and is responsible for the evaluation and selection of risk (binding via contract) which ensure the profitable acquisition of new policyholders and the continued profitable retention of inforce cases within assigned authority levels and product types. This position may also assist in the training, technical development and mentoring of Associate Underwriters.

Principal Duties & Responsibilities

  • Make appropriate risk selection based on the facts presented in applications or request for insurance
  • Fully document reasons and thought processes to support case decisions made
  • Assist in the analyzing and identifying early and ongoing risk trends
  • Develop personal credibility with sales force, key brokers, customers both external and internal customers and field management
  • Support Unum/Colonial Life’s commitment to privacy and safeguarding confidential information by accurately verifying applicant’s key individual identifiers
  • Assist in supporting the achievement of specific top-line, bottom-line growth
  • Develop technical expertise in risk selection
  • Develop selection and retention of customers through accurate risk assessment
  • Deliver dependable, accurate and timely service and build relationships with all customers, consistent with the company’s commitment to achieving a distinct competitive advantage
  • Process all reinstatement applications and support policy level applications from the queues as needed to support and meet departmental unit goals
  • Identify efficiency improvements to include new and better ways to handle Underwriting tasks through automation and training

Job Specifications

  • 4 year college degree preferred or equivalent work experience
  • Consistently meet quality and quantity standards as outlined by department expectations
  • Strong risk management skills
  • Strong knowledge of products for which they underwrite

Industry and Product Knowledge:

  • Knowledge of benefits and features of all applicable products

Technology

  • Understanding of relevant enrollment platforms, their capabilities and limitations

Communication

  • Effective written and spoken;
  • Ability to develop negotiation and influencing skills;
  • Proactively seeks guidance and knowledge from others

Financial Acumen and Risk Analysis

  • Ability to understand financial concepts;
  • Basic understanding of UW tools with assisted guidance in analysis;
  • Makes solid, fact-based decisions within their limit;
  • Awareness of key performance and sales metrics of assigned territories

The base salary range for applicants for this position is listed below. Unless actual salary is indicated above in the job description, actual pay will be based on skill, geographical location and experience.

$45,600.00-$86,200.00

Additionally, Unum offers a portfolio of benefits and rewards that are competitive and comprehensive including healthcare benefits (health, vision, dental), insurance benefits (short & long-term disability), performance-based incentive plans, paid time off, and a 401(k) retirement plan with an employer match up to 5% and an additional 4.5% contribution whether you contribute to the plan or not. All benefits are subject to the terms and conditions of individual Plans.
