Group SHEQ Manager

SHEQ Management

Location: Gauteng, Johannesburg
Employment Type: Permanent

Our client is seeking an experienced Group SHEQ Manager to lead the development, implementation and continuous improvement of Safety, Health, Environment and Quality (SHEQ) systems across all open-cast mining operations within the group.

The successful candidate will ensure legal and regulatory compliance, strengthen the organisation's SHEQ culture and align SHEQ strategies with business objectives to enhance operational performance, safety and sustainability.

Key Responsibilities

SHEQ Management


  • Develop and implement a group-wide SHEQ strategy aligned with organisational goals and objectives.

  • Lead the Company SHEQ function and teams across all operational sites.

  • Integrate SHEQ systems, standards and best practices consistently across all mining operations.

  • Advise executive leadership on SHEQ risks, performance, compliance and strategic initiatives.

  • Coordinate group SHEQ meetings, activities and action plans.

  • Provide expert SHEQ advice relating to mining activities.

  • Develop and maintain SHEQ policies, procedures and documentation.

  • Establish, implement and maintain ISO 45001, ISO 14001 and ISO 9001 management systems and certifications.

  • Drive continuous improvement across SHEQ systems and processes.

  • Maintain an up-to-date SHEQ legal register and ensure compliance with applicable legislation and standards.

  • Identify, assess and communicate material SHEQ legal compliance risks.

  • Develop and implement strategies to reduce material SHEQ risks across the group.

  • Roll out standardised risk management processes across all sites.

  • Review risk assessments and recommend appropriate mitigation measures.

  • Manage and participate in internal and external SHEQ audits.

  • Consolidate and report on SHEQ performance across the group.

  • Establish, monitor and analyse SHEQ KPIs and objectives.

  • Lead investigations into incidents and non-conformances.

  • Ensure corrective, preventive and improvement actions are implemented and tracked to closure.

  • Ensure significant incidents are communicated across the organisation to promote learning and prevent recurrence.

  • Develop and implement SHEQ training needs analyses, training plans and awareness programmes.

  • Lead SHEQ inductions, training programmes and awareness campaigns.

  • Develop and maintain outcomes-based SHEQ learning materials.

  • Foster a strong culture of SHEQ awareness, accountability and compliance across employees and contractors.

  • Approve and oversee SHEQ-related projects, including planning, budgeting, procurement and execution.

  • Review and approve SHEQ reports and documentation.

  • Approve PPE design requirements in line with operational risks, legal requirements and industry best practices.

  • Research and implement SHEQ best practices, technologies and systems to improve operational performance and sustainability.

Human Resource Management


  • Manage and supervise the SHEQ team effectively.

  • Delegate responsibilities according to team members' skills and expertise.

  • Monitor task completion and ensure adherence to safety and quality standards.

  • Provide training, mentorship and development opportunities to SHEQ team members.

  • Identify training and development needs and support employee career growth.

  • Manage team performance and conduct regular performance reviews.

  • Maintain performance agreements for all direct reports.

  • Address workflow bottlenecks and reallocate resources where required.

  • Promote effective time management and productivity within the team.

  • Maintain accurate employee working-hour and overtime records.

  • Foster positive employee relations through open communication and engagement.

  • Address employee concerns, grievances and disputes fairly and promptly.

  • Enforce company policies, procedures and codes of conduct.

  • Conduct investigations into workplace incidents and policy violations where required.

  • Support workforce planning, recruitment, selection and onboarding activities.

Financial Management


  • Prepare, approve and manage the SHEQ budget.

  • Monitor expenditure against approved budgets.

  • Identify, analyse and report on budget variances.

  • Prepare monthly financial performance reports for the SHEQ function.

  • Implement financial and operational controls to mitigate risks.

  • Drive cost-saving and cash conservation initiatives.

  • Ensure effective allocation of SHEQ resources in line with organisational priorities.

Customer & Stakeholder Relations


  • Develop and maintain strategic supplier relationships.

  • Liaise with suppliers and address supplier queries and complaints effectively.

  • Develop and maintain customer relationships to support business objectives.

  • Establish relationships with relevant construction and mining industry stakeholders.

  • Develop and maintain relationships with internal and external stakeholders.

  • Establish strategies to strengthen stakeholder engagement and collaboration.

  • Represent the organisation professionally when engaging with customers, suppliers, authorities and other stakeholders.

Corporate Governance & Ethics


  • Ensure adherence to the organisation's Code of Conduct and Code of Ethics.

  • Ensure compliance with applicable legal and regulatory requirements.

  • Promote and maintain strong corporate governance and ethical standards.

  • Ensure SHEQ practices remain aligned with organisational policies and industry requirements.

Minimum Requirements

Qualifications


  • Grade 12 / Senior Certificate.

  • Bachelor's degree in Safety Management, Environmental Science or a related field.

  • Honours degree preferred.

  • COMSOC 1 and 2.

  • ISO 45001 Lead Auditor.

  • ISO 14001 Lead Auditor.

  • ISO 9001 Lead Auditor.

  • Valid Code EB driver's licence.

Experience


  • 10+ years' SHEQ experience within the mining industry.

  • Minimum 5 years' experience in a senior SHEQ leadership role.

  • Proven experience managing SHEQ functions across multiple operational sites.

  • Experience developing and implementing group-wide SHEQ strategies and management systems.

  • Proven experience with ISO 45001, ISO 14001 and ISO 9001 implementation and certification.

  • Extensive experience in SHEQ legislation, compliance, risk management, audits and inspections.

  • Experience leading incident investigations and root cause analysis.

  • Experience managing SHEQ teams, budgets and projects within a mining environment.
