Job Description

Build community through fitness at the Beaverton YMCA.
We are looking for someone who loves our members and community and wants to make a positive impact by strengthening, empowering and growing our fitness program.
Under the direction of the Healthy Living Coordinator, the Group Fitness Instructor will teach and administer YMCA Group Fitness classes. The Group Fitness instructor has a passion for fitness, an innate drive for connecting with people and making them feel supported and successful and enjoy making people smile. They are responsible for instructing exercise programs under the YMCA guidelines and planning the class to assist in meeting the goals and objectives of the Beaverton Hoop YMCA.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Enjoy teaching assigned classes on a consistent, regular, punctual basis
  • Be available to substitute teach whenever possible
  • Strive to maintain and increase your class attendance and participation
  • Teach to make students feel successful, and educate members on proper exercise techniques, and make adjustments/modifications so all may participate.
  • Make your students' safety and enjoyment your priority
  • Convey warmth and genuine interest to the students: make eye contact, smile, use students' names, personalize the workout, even in a large class
  • Commit to the position as a business professional, in dress, conduct and preparation.
  • Ensure all equipment and props are properly used during class and properly put away / stored after class
  • Be ready to greet members and set up your class prior to scheduled class starting time, and plan to stay after class to help breakdown your class equipment and meet with members
  • Play appropriate music (provided by instructor)
  • Recommend and promote other Y programs as appropriate
  • Commit to establishing long-term harmonious relationships with staff, volunteers, participants, members and families
  • Stay current using continuing education to maintain and grow proper/required certifications in group exercise
  • Attend all required staff meetings.

ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONS

  • Incorporate and model our YMCA Christian principles into your work
  • Visual and auditory ability to respond to critical incidents and the physical ability to act swiftly in an emergency situation
  • Observe participant activities, enforce safety regulations, apply appropriate techniques and cue movements appropriately
  • Ability to accurately demonstrate exercises/movements and to clearly give instructions and directions
  • Able to use (or learn to use) a headset instructor mic
  • Understand and apply basic fitness principles
  • Ability to teach a class to multiple levels of fitness

Requirements

REQUIREMENTS

  • Nationally recognized certification
  • CPR/AED/First Aid – available as a staff benefit through the YMCA
  • Must pass YMCA background check
  • Experience using basic computer software, audio equipment, and mobile technology
  • At least two years of experience instructing group exercise (preferred)
  • (preferred) Certifications in multiple formats. Ie: Pilates, Yoga, Active Aging formats, Barre, Cycle, Dance Fitness, HIIT, Kickboxing, Tai Chi, Yoga,
