Salary: £27,694 to £29,064 Per annum

Hours of work: 37 Hours per week

All about the role:

To carry out routine tasks of street cleansing, grounds maintenance, horticulture and other works at all sites under the control of the Town Council.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

To assist with the following tasks:

  • Grounds maintenance including watering, fertilising, mowing, weed killing and general husbandry, to meet defined standards.
  • Street cleansing, litter collection and bin management.
  • Operating machinery, tools and plant used in tasks of routine grounds maintenance.
  • Routine horticulture.
  • Minor improvement schemes.
  • Helping other staff in works of a technical nature.
  • Collection and delivery of plant and machinery and any other supplies to any Town Council sites.
  • Routine maintenance of plant and machinery as part of the ongoing machinery maintenance programme.
  • Summer and winter maintenance programme of Town Council sites.
  • Set up of the Christmas lights programme.
  • Park Warden duties in John Coles Park, including enforcement of park by laws and security duties.
  • Supervising part time Park Wardens if required to do so.
  • Helping clubs and societies who use John Coles Park to have safe use and enjoyment of the facilities.
  • Organisation of events in John Coles Park.
  • Checking, safety and maintenance of all play areas operated by Chippenham Town Council.

Special Conditions of the Post:

  • To work on any 5 days out of 7 per week if required without enhancement except on Bank Holidays, within the total of 37 hours per week.
  • To work at any sites operated by the Town Council, including some weekends and Bank Holidays as required.
  • To undertake any other duties required by the management of the Town Council which are applicable to the grading and nature of the post, and which do not change the general character of the duties, or the level of responsibility entailed.
  • To be included on a rota for call outs in emergencies affecting any Town Council sites.
  • To be appointed a key holder for facilities as required.
  • To be trained to the appropriate level to assist with minor repairs of machinery and equipment.
  • To be available, subject to operational requirements, to undertake any relevant raining course as required.
  • To take reasonable care for the health and safety of themselves and anyone else who may be affected by their work.

  • Other Council staff.
  • Council members.
  • Members of the public, clubs and societies using John Coles Park and other sites.
  • Contractors and suppliers.

Person Specification

Essential skills and qualifications:

  • Flexible approach to work.
  • Excellent timekeeper
  • Driving licence.
  • Experience in the use of relevant machinery associated with groundsmanship in particular ride on mowers and tractors.

Desirable skills and qualifications:

  • Chainsaw operator’s licence.
