Job Description Summary
Performs a variety of routine and seasonal tasks to maintain the appearance, safety, and functionality of campus grounds. Responsibilities include mowing lawns, trimming and edging, weed control, pruning shrubs, raking and sweeping walkways, watering lawns and landscaped areas, and maintaining ornamental beds. Assists with snow and ice removal as needed to ensure safe pedestrian and vehicular access. Provides support to other departments within Plant Operations and Facilities Support during campus events, emergencies, or special projects as assigned.
Duties
1. Operates college-owned vehicles and powered grounds equipment, including commercial mowers, tractors, and twin-axle vehicles, in a safe and responsible manner.
2. Mows, trims, and edges, and maintains lawns using commercial mowers, weed trimmers, and edgers, and performs site cleanup following grounds maintenance activities.
3. Maintains lawns, trees and flower beds by mulching, aerating, weeding, trimming limbs, hedging shrubs/hedges, trimming or edging around flower beds, walks and walls.
4. Uses hand and power tools, including but not limited to shovels, rakes, pruning saws, hedge and brush trimmers, axes, shears, pruners, and chainsaws, to complete assigned tasks. Also, operates the machinery for sidewalks and parking lots.
5. Collects and removes trash, debris, and litter throughout campus grounds to maintain a clean and welcoming environment.
6. Mixes, applies and distributes fertilizers, herbicides or insecticides onto grass, shrubs or trees, using hand or automatic sprayers or spreaders in accordance with safety guidelines and applicable regulations.
7. Reports maintenance or repairs to Maintenance Mechanic to fix.
8. Removes leaves and organic debris from campus grounds on a routine and seasonal basis.
9. Performs sweeping operations using powered equipment to maintain campus cleanliness.
10. Contributes to the College Vision, Mission, Values, and RISE statement.
11. Supports workforce diversity in all its aspects.
12. Performs other duties deemed necessary by upper management.
Minimum Requirements (Applicant must meet all of the minimum requirements)
1. High School Diploma or equivalent;
2. Six months of full-time or equivalent groundskeeping work experience;
3. Valid unrestricted driver’s license.
Preferred Qualifications
1. Two years of full-time or equivalent experience in an educational institution;
2. One year of full-time or equivalent groundskeeping work experience;
3. Herbicides or Pesticides Licenses;
4. Proficiency in a foreign language such as Spanish, an East Slavic language, and/or American Sign Language.
