Job Description

Great Blue Heron Casino & Hotel is seeking a Part-time Groundskeeper!

Reporting to the Facilities Manager or designate, the Groundskeeper plays an integral role in providing a safe and well-maintained environment by performing routine maintenance of the outside grounds, buildings, sidewalks, entrances and roadways.

The ideal candidate is an energetic professional with proven knowledge, skills and abilities, executing the following in support of the company’s vision, mission and values:

  • Promote the values of the Great Blue Heron Casino & Hotel and GCE by example at all times and guide staff in adopting these values as a way of operating daily at the Great Blue Heron
  • Prevention of weather related conditions from posing safety concerns or hazards and to immediately report any hazards or concerns to the Maintenance Supervisor or in the absence of the Facilities Manager
  • Implementing continuous improvement programs involving changes to processes or services and procedures
  • Safety: Implementing solutions to Health, Safety and Environmental issues utilized
  • Ensuring that safety equipment is in good working condition and being utilized properly at all times
  • Acting as liaison between contractors and senior management, specifically related to environmental support services
  • Reviewing spare parts requirements and availability; maintaining stock logs for fuel consumption, equipment usage, and general supplies
  • Ensuring the required P.M. schedules for all equipment are followed, and
  • equipment is maintained in a safe operable condition
  • Assisting with special projects as they arise, or as assigned by the Maintenance Supervisor, or Facilities Manager
  • Litter control, grass cutting, weed control, snow shoveling
  • To perform other duties as required by the Maintenance Supervisor
  • Work in compliance with the provisions of the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA), regulations, and internal health and safety policies and procedures
  • To help create a healthy work environment by not condoning, participating in or reporting, as you become aware, any harassment, discrimination, gossiping or unfair treatment of anyone
  • Use and wear the equipment, protective devices or clothing required by the Great Blue Heron Casino; must always report to work in a clean uniform and CSA steel toed safety shoes
  • Proper hygiene and grooming at all times
  • Ensure and assist in the routine cleaning and sanitizing of production areas according to the established cleaning standards and schedules along with always maintaining at all times a clean, sanitary and safe work station
  • Report to supervisor any issuing or defective equipment or protective device which could endanger someone
  • Report to supervisor any contravention of the OHSA regulations, or the Great Blue Heron Casino & Hotel safety policies and procedures by another employee
  • Report any observed hazards to the supervisor
  • DO NOT remove or make ineffective any protective device without providing an adequate temporary substitute. When the work is complete, the original protective device must be replaced immediately.
  • DO NOT use or operate any equipment, machine, device or thing or otherwise work in a manner that may endanger anyone
  • DO NOT engage in any prank, contest, feat of strength, unnecessary running or rough and boisterous conduct
  • Know, understand and implement safe work practices and procedures
  • Know, understand and employ established rules and procedures for handling materials, equipment and processes (e.g. use proper lifting techniques, etc.)
  • Use equipment and materials only in the manner intended,
  • Adherence to WHMIS at all times
  • Attend required safety training programs, and apply the knowledge gained from these training sessions.
  • Report all injuries, accidents and unusual conditions immediately to supervisor
  • Inspect work area daily and report any hazards immediately to supervisor

Successful applicants will demonstrate the following qualifications:

  • High School diploma or equivalent required
  • Post Secondary education in related field or equivalent years of work experience required
  • WHMIS Certified
  • Must have a class G drivers license with a good drivers abstract
  • Knowledge of horticulture, grounds maintenance and basic mechanical proficiencies
  • Good written and verbal communication skills
  • Knowledge of the OH&S Act and Regulations
  • Knowledge with the operation of commercial landscape equipment and light application – heavy equipment
  • Ability to work in extreme weather conditions, sometimes at heights
  • Ability to follow directions
  • Excellent problem solving skills
  • Ability to work in a fast pace environment
  • Ability to lift 50lbs to chest level
  • Must be able to work in a team environment and independently

Candidates must be ready and willing to work a flexible schedule, including evenings, weekends, holidays and overnights. The hours of work will be based on operational needs. Ready to embark on your next adventure?
