The groundskeeper II maintains campus landscapes to ensure a clean, healthy, and visually appealing environment. Responsibilities include mowing, pruning, planting, and seasonal preparation of vegetation, as well as treating areas for pests and weeds while adhering to safety standards. This role involves operating and maintaining specialized equipment like tractors, loaders, and lift trucks and performing minor repairs as needed. Additionally, the groundskeeper II may instruct other staff on the proper use of pesticides and materials to ensure consistent quality across campus grounds.

Essential Job Functions and Performance Indicators

Job Responsibilities and Execution

  • Manages and maintains campus vegetation by mowing; pruning, trimming, and staking trees and shrubs; and detailing flowerbeds and other landscape elements
  • Maintains the cleanliness of campus grounds by removing trash, debris, and other refuse
  • Prepares grounds for seasonal climate changes by pruning trees/bushes and distributing fertilizer
  • Adheres to strict safety standards and practices
  • Treats vegetation for insects and removes weeds using pesticides, fertilizers, and other chemicals
  • Excavates holes and trenches for installation of lights, sprinklers, and other equipment
  • Removes debris from mulched areas and flowerbeds
  • Plants seeds, bulbs, flowers, shrubs, trees, and other vegetation in designated areas
  • Repairs and adjusts tools, machinery, and equipment
  • Operates various equipment including skid steer loaders, tractors, backhoes, front-end loaders, dump trucks, and aerial lift trucks
  • Acquires and stores pesticide solutions; mixes or dilutes specified chemicals or materials according to directions and applies them at the recommended rate
  • Instructs groundskeepers, as required, in applying sprays, dusts, and other materials

Required Qualifications – An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience will be considered. Additional requirements may be designated by position.

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Valid driver’s license
  • Prior experience operating equipment including, skid steer loaders, tractors, backhoes, front-end loaders, dump trucks, and aerial lift trucks
  • Demonstrated experience in the grounds industry, including considerable knowledge of common practices and related tools, equipment, and materials
