Job Description

New Cathedral Cemetery, located in Baltimore, Maryland, is seeking a full-time Cemetery Groundskeeper. Our Cemetery Groundskeepers are the public face of the cemetery. They are responsible for maintaining the beauty and upkeep of the grounds while assisting with burial services. Staff members prepare graves for services, maintain cemetery facilities and equipment, and work collaboratively with outside vendors to achieve our customer service and maintenance goals. This is a full-time, year-round position offering excellent benefits. The ideal candidate will take pride in maintaining a respectful, safe, and welcoming environment for families and visitors while supporting the daily operations of the cemetery.

Essential Functions

• Operate a backhoe safely and efficiently to facilitate burial services.
• Operate lawn and grounds equipment, including push and riding mowers, snow blowers, weed trimmers, leaf blowers, and other related power equipment as needed.
• Remove debris and trash from cemetery grounds.
• Participate as a team member in setting up tents, chairs, and burial service equipment at two locations.
• Read cemetery maps to determine the location of burial sites.
• Perform routine maintenance and minor repairs to cemetery facilities and building systems.
• Follow all safety policies and procedures and ensure compliance with corporate, federal, state, and local regulations, including OSHA and environmental guidelines.
• Assist with the installation and relocation of burial vaults, cemetery monuments, and concrete monument foundations.
• Work a full-time schedule, Monday through Friday, with some scheduled Saturday hours as needed.

Position Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent required.
• Minimum of two years of cemetery groundskeeping experience preferred.
• Experience operating a backhoe for grave excavation required.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Ability to use hand tools and equipment, including but not limited to shovels, picks, rakes, sledgehammers, lawn mowers, weed trimmers, and leaf blowers.
• Mechanical aptitude and the ability to perform basic maintenance on backhoes, lawn mowers, and vehicles is a plus.
• Ability to accurately use measuring devices, such as tape measures and yardsticks.
• Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions.
• Physically capable of performing the essential functions of the position.
• Ability to operate equipment safely and responsibly.
• Ability to work effectively as part of a team.
• Strong communication skills.
• Valid driver's license required.
• Ability to work occasional Saturdays, typically for approximately four hours when needed.

Pay Range: $17.00 - $19.00, Hourly
