Spring & Summer: Grounds Supervisor
SCHEDULE: Full-time, September - mid-March (Ice Rinks) Monday - Saturday, 7:30am - 4:30pm, mid-March – September (Grounds) Monday - Friday, 7:00am - 3:30pm. Additional hours are required for emergency weather situations. Schedule may vary according to departmental and Academy needs. *This position is considered Essential Personnel.

Position Purpose
Fall and Winter Responsible for creating, maintaining, and repairing ice surfaces for two rinks, ensuring that each sheet of ice is safe, level, and high‑quality for hockey, skating, and special events. This role supports daily rink operations by monitoring ice conditions, operating resurfacing equipment, and performing routine maintenance to deliver a consistent, high level skating surface.
Spring and Summer Maintain and preserve the Academy’s physical environment to ensure a clean safe appearance and functional condition for those visiting, working on, and using the main campus, Academy woods, parking areas and trails.
Job Responsibilities
Fall and Winter (Ice Rinks)
- Provide strong, fair, and consistent leadership for ice rink attendants.
- Responsible for creating and building ice sheets, coordinating with outside vendors as needed to ensure proper ice installation and quality.
- Operate ice resurfacing equipment; Perform scraping, edging, patching, and ice repairs to maintain optimal surface conditions.
- Develop and manage rink attendant schedules required for daily rink operations.
- Schedule and oversee routine preventative maintenance for ice making equipment and rink facilities; maintain boards, glass, benches, locker rooms, rest rooms, and rink tools.
- Clean rink areas and associated support facilities to ensure safe and welcoming environment.
- Perform snow removal operations for the ice rink facility and designated support areas.
- Assist with the annual operation to remove ice in both rinks.
- Oversee security and lockup procedures for ice rinks.
- Coordinate emergency preparedness for ice rink operations.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Spring and Summer (Grounds)
- Perform routine and repetitive manual labor.
- Clean culverts, drains, roads and ditches; spread sand and gravel; erect road markers; shovel snow; collecting refuse; raking leaves and grass; mowing grass; operating light equipment related to above duties, including minor maintenance to equipment including cleaning of equipment.
- Perform other grounds maintenance as required.
- Move furniture, heavy objects, and equipment.
- Maintains natural grass and synthetic turf athletic fields, including measuring and painting field markings.
- Maintains and repairs lawn irrigation systems.
- May be required to work under athletic maintenance as program dictates: maintaining ball fields, turf and tennis courts, setting-up and taking down goals, cleaning areas, parking cars, helping with set-up and takedown for athletic games, and cleaning and moving wrestling mats and equipment.
- Cultivate, transplant, prune, water, and maintain lawns, shrubs, trees and flowers as instructed.
- Operate all motorized and non-motorized small grounds machines and tractors with implements (i.e., york rake, aerator, vacuum, overseeder and sweeper, large rotary mowers, forklifts and rubbish packer truck).
- Operates bucket truck for tree work.
- Assist with setup and takedown of areas and fields for athletic events.
- Cleans restrooms, athletic support buildings, and outside areas.
- Maintain a clean and orderly storage area within the grounds department.
- Provides support for the collection, hauling, and disposal of refuse and recycling from Academy facilities and residences.
- Performs other duties as assigned.

Position Requirements
Education
- High school diploma or GED preferred.
- Ice rink operation education, preferred.
Experience
- Minimum 2 years’ experience with ice rink operations and maintenance equipment, grounds equipment and other machinery required.
- Knowledge of snow and ice removal operations preferred.
- Must be at least 21 years old.
- Valid operator's license with the ability to operate ice resurfacing equipment required.
- Irrigation operation experience helpful.
- Pesticide applicator license and knowledge of Integrated Pest Management Practices preferred.
- Experience working with adolescents in an educational setting preferred.
- Experience in an institutional or campus setting
Physical Requirements
- Physical demands are in excess of those for sedentary work and will require the ability to remain standing for extended periods of time, go up and down flights of steps, lift and push heavy objects as well as stoop, squat, bend, kneel, crouch, and lift.
- Ability to lift and transport up to 50lbs without assistance.
- Ability to work inside ice rinks during fall and winter, and outdoors during spring and summer in varying weather conditions.
Additional Requirements
- Successfully complete a criminal background check (reviewed every 5 years).
- Clean Driving record (reviewed annually).
- Must consistently wear assigned uniform and equipment and adhere to the appearance guidelines.
- May be required to handle hazardous materials in the work area.
- *Essential personnel are required to report to or remain at work if instructed directly by designated personnel during emergency events or inclement weather.
