Schedule/Travel: Per Diem/On Call

FLSA: Non-exempt

Classification: Staff

Start Date: ASAP

Kent School is seeking a per diem/on call Groom who will participate in the day-to-day operational care of performance horses for our equestrian program. This is not a riding position. Schedule will vary according to the needs of the Department and Kent School.

Specific duties and responsibilities:

• Night checks
• Early, late and after hours needs
• Transportation of horses to vet clinic, or elsewhere, as needed
• AM/PM feeding (including hay, water, grain)
• Assisting with grain preparation and inventory as needed under direction of Barn Manager
• Cleaning and scrubbing buckets as well as paddocks regularly
• Meeting trailers and assisting with arrivals and departures of horses
• Meet vet and farrier when Barn Manager is not available
• Muck stalls
• Turnout and turn-in horses (including dressing, blanketing, booting)
• Assist with lunging and hand-walking horses along with medicating, wrapping, ice booting, bandaging under the direction of Barn Manager
• Keeping barn clean, tidy and organized
• Assisting with setting courses, maintaining jumps and arenas (including manure cleanup, picking rocks, raking, watering, cleaning, etc)
• General barn, facilities and grounds maintenance and cleaning (dusting, sweeping, mopping, scrubbing, disinfecting, cobwebs, picking up garbage, raking, etc)
• Caring for horses (clipping, grooming, bathing, hosing)
• Laundry
• Cleaning tack and tacking horses, as needed
• Assisting with camp, summer events, horse shows, etc
• Restock hay and shavings and stock feed when delivered
• Light maintenance and repairs as necessary
• Monitor horse welfare and alert Barn Manager to lameness, horse not eating or drinking, or any other signs of distress
• Provide high-quality and professional care of horses

Qualifications:

• Horse knowledge and experience preferred
• Excellent attention to detail and communication skills
• Self-starter with a positive attitude and strong work ethic
• Reliable, dependable and punctual who is flexible and adaptable
• Be respectful, collaborative, kind and caring to people and horses
• Willing to learn and be open to suggestions in a team environment
• Manage multiple tasks and deadlines with solid time management skills

Physical Requirements:

Physical demands listed below are representative of those that must be met by the employee to successfully perform the essential functions of the job:

• Able to pick up, carry, move, push and wheel 50+ lbs
• Sit, stand, and walk for required periods of time, and in all weather conditions.
• Visual acuity within normal parameters.

Additional Requirements:

• Successful completion of post-offer, pre-employment criminal background check and drug test.
• Maintain punctual and regular attendance.
• Work is performed on a smoke-free campus.
