Store Manager

Reporting to: Managing Director

About the Role

We are looking for an experienced and results-driven Store Manager to lead the full operation of a busy retail grocery store. You will be responsible for driving sales, maximising profitability, and ensuring an exceptional experience for both customers and staff.

Key Responsibilities

Operations & Sales

  • Drive store performance to meet and exceed sales and profit targets in line with the annual budget
  • Tour all departments regularly to ensure standards of cleanliness, safety, and productivity are consistently met
  • Monitor operations and identify opportunities for improvement
  • Oversee accurate inventory management, cycle counts, and product freshness
  • Review pricing, specials, and temporary price reductions across the sales floor
  • Implement and oversee effective security and fire safety programmes

Financial Management

  • Prepare and manage the store's annual operating budget, ensuring the business operates within budget and maximises profitability
  • Oversee all cash accountability and accurate store bookkeeping
  • Negotiate contracts and pricing with vendors and suppliers
  • Submit weekly summary reports to the Board of Directors covering ongoing projects, completed tasks, and key issues

People Management

  • Lead, motivate, and develop a high-performing team across all departments
  • Oversee scheduling, payroll administration, and effective utilisation of store personnel
  • Conduct yearly performance appraisals for all members of management
  • Liaise with HR on hiring, performance, disciplinary matters, and team changes
  • Foster a positive team culture with strong morale and open communication
  • Ensure all staff are courteous, professional, and responsive to customer needs

Customer Experience

  • Ensure all customer complaints and requests are handled promptly and professionally
  • Maintain high standards of merchandising and product presentation to maximise sales
  • Greet customers and remain observant on the shop floor

Strategy & Compliance

  • Chair regular department manager meetings to maintain efficient and informed operations
  • Research and identify new trends in the grocery retail industry; propose and implement initiatives with Board approval
  • Ensure all company policies, procedures, and compliance requirements are upheld
  • Act as a company representative both within the store and in the wider community
  • Be available and responsive in the event of any emergency

Qualifications and Skills

  • High school diploma or equivalent; a relevant tertiary qualification is an advantage
  • Minimum 10 years of experience in grocery retail, with at least 5 years in a Store Manager or General Manager role
  • Strong knowledge of perishables and retail grocery operations
  • Proven ability to lead teams, drive change, and improve operational efficiency
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Solid understanding of budgeting, inventory, and basic financial management
  • Highly organised with strong multitasking and time management abilities
  • Motivated, detail-oriented, and able to thrive in a fast-paced environment

Physical Requirements

  • Role involves standing, walking, bending, and climbing throughout the working day
  • Must be able to lift and manoeuvre items weighing up to 50 lbs or more
  • Availability for weekend, evening, and holiday shifts is required

  • May be required to take on projects or duties outside the standard remit that benefit the business
