Job Description

About us

At Dyson we are encouraged to think differently, challenge convention and be unafraid to make mistakes. We are proud to be authentic, different and pioneers. We are driven by a desire to solve real problems and improve everyday lives with intuitive solutions that do more, but use less. Family owned, we are not restricted by conventional thinking; we explore, discover and learn for ourselves. Never satisfied, we believe everything can always be made better.

About the role

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Graduate Mechanical Design Research Engineer to join the highly successful Motors and Power Systems team within the Research, Design and Development (RDD) department.

The team have been pioneers in the industry for more than 15 years, coming up with a range of very high speed, very power dense compressor motors that are highly efficient, cost-effective and robust. These motors are conceived in the UK and manufactured at Dyson’s state-of-the-art facilities in Singapore and Philippines.

Within this team the successful applicant will be primarily working on the mechanical design of our Dyson Digital Motors (DDMs).

Key responsibilities:

  • Deliver robust design solutions that fulfil the fundamental design requirements

  • Generate design requirements and identify risk areas

  • Develop 3D CAD and engineering drawings for mechanical components and assemblies along with test rigs and assembly fixtures

  • Understand and comply with relevant International Standards

  • Be responsible for delivering parts from concept to proof of principle

  • Develop innovative and novel concepts with high value IP while considering freedom to operate

  • Follow best practice and improve upon existing processes within the team where possible

  • Degree in a relevant engineering or scientific discipline (2:1 degree or better)

  • Strong understanding of mechanical engineering principles

  • Capable of performing hand calculations to provide initial design direction and confidence in simulation results

  • Capable of using 3D computer aided design (CAD) software packages

  • Awareness of GD&T

  • Understanding of physical failure methods and approaches to root cause analysis

  • Understanding of design verification approaches and ability to define suitable test methods

  • Able to communicate appropriate, concise and accurate information in written and verbal formats

  • Able to carry out simple structural FE analysis of components to inform their design, and create an associated test programme to verify results

  • Able to work with a variety of multi-disciplinary project teams

  • Understanding of materials science and manufacturing processes

  • Can-do attitude, willing to work outside of comfort zone and learn new skills and abilities in the process

Desired technical knowledge and skills:

  • An awareness of power system design, including motors, transmissions and energy storage solutions

  • An awareness of other engineering disciplines such aerodynamics, thermodynamics, CFD analysis and electrical, electronics and electromagnetic systems

  • Experience using Siemens NX, ANSYS Workbench and Siemens Teamcenter

  • Able to carry out simple modal, thermal, rotordynamic and impact analyses of components

  • Appreciation of statistics and robust design techniques

  • Awareness of tolerance stack analysis

About Dyson

Dyson solves real-world problems and creates better products through the application of engineering, science, design and creativity. It is a family-owned, global technology company, founded by Sir James Dyson who remains at the helm alongside his son Jake.

Since inventing the first cyclonic bagless vacuum cleaner, the DC01, Dyson has consistently invested in research and development to improve its products and technologies radically. Dyson offers products across a growing range of areas: floorcare, air purification, robotics, haircare including formulations, lighting, hand drying, and most recently audio. Dyson continues to expand into new areas.

Today, Dyson sells products in more than 80 markets, has 450 Dyson stores worldwide and is available in all major technology and beauty retailers. Dyson has global headquarters in Singapore and major technology campuses in Singapore, the UK, Malaysia, and the Philippines. Its global team of engineers, scientists and software developers are focused on developing technology-enabled products which work better and which people love to use. Key areas of focus have included high-speed electric digital motors, sensing and vision systems, robotics, machine learning and aerodynamics.

Beyond products, to encourage an inventive future, Dyson is also inspiring the next generation of engineers and inventors through the Dyson Institute of Engineering and Technology, the James Dyson Foundation and the James Dyson Award.

The Dyson family applies its problem-solving approach in other fields, and established Dyson Farming in 2012. It is one of the largest farming businesses in the UK, extending to 36,000 acres across Lincolnshire, Oxfordshire, Gloucestershire and Somerset. It is a family-owned enterprise unlike any other, focussed on long-term investment in British farming and the countryside to grow tasty and nutritious food.
