WellSpan's Intraprocedural Skills Execution (WISE) program provides formal learning opportunities to all perioperative Novice Nurse hires at WellSpan. Per AORN a Novice Perioperative RN is “any registered nurse who has not worked in the perioperative environment before, including a new graduate, an experienced nurse from another area of nursing, or a nurse with previous perioperative experience who has not maintained basic competency” (AORN, 2022). The program’s goal is to assist in decreasing the theory-practice gap by providing foundational learning, increasing confidence, knowledge, and competence; while improving professional interdisciplinary communication; and nurse retention rates in the perioperative environment at WellSpan.
