Uniting is looking for Casual Health Education Officers to join the Medically Supervised Injecting Centre (MSIC) in Kings Cross. MSIC provides a safe, supervised and non-judgemental environment for people who use drugs, with a focus on reducing harm, preventing overdose and connecting people with health and social support.
About the role
As a Health Education Officer, you’ll provide frontline support to clients before, during and after injecting episodes, working closely with nursing staff to maintain a safe and respectful environment.
You’ll build rapport with clients, provide health education and harm reduction advice, identify health and wellbeing needs, and connect people with appropriate health and welfare services. You’ll need to be calm, confident and able to engage with people without judgement, including in challenging situations.
About you
You’ll bring:
• A strong understanding of and commitment to harm minimisation and social justice.
• An awareness of the health, social and legal issues associated with injecting drug use and marginalised populations.
• The ability to work effectively in a dynamic and sometimes challenging environment.
• Strong communication, engagement and interpersonal skills.
• Confidence using computer systems and clinical databases.
• An understanding of the legislative and policy frameworks relevant to MSIC operations.
Experience working with people who inject drugs, or in needle and syringe programs, drug and alcohol, crisis, accommodation or other community services, will be highly regarded.
Shift flexibility
This is a casual, on-site position at MSIC in Kings Cross, with a combination of:
• 9.30am – 1.30pm
• 9.30am – 6.00pm
• 1.30pm – 6.00pm
• 1.30pm – 10.00pm
• 6.00pm – 10.00pm
Weekend and Public Holiday shifts: 9.30am – 1.30pm and 1.30pm – 6.00pm.
Ideally, you’ll be available to work at least one evening shift.
