WSP Africa’s Power & Energy team is looking for a Graduate Engineer – Overhead Lines to join our Midrand office. This is an opportunity for a Mechanical, Structural or Civil Engineering graduate to begin a career in the design and delivery of transmission and distribution infrastructure, supported by experienced specialists and structured professional development.

Your responsibilities will include

  • Supporting feasibility, concept and detailed design for overhead transmission and distribution lines.
  • Assisting with route studies, line profiling, tower or pole spotting, sag-and-tension calculations, clearances and loading assessments.
  • Developing proficiency in PLS-CADD and related overhead line design software.
  • Supporting the analysis and detailing of towers, poles, cross-arms, gantries, stays, anchors and foundations.
  • Coordinating survey, geotechnical, environmental, electrical, structural and civil engineering inputs.
  • Preparing calculations, drawings, reports, specifications, bills of quantities and schedules under technical supervision.
  • Participating in design reviews, site visits, inspections and construction support while applying project safety and quality requirements.

About you

  • A BEng or BSc Eng degree in Mechanical, Civil or Structural Engineering from an ECSA-accredited institution, or an equivalent recognised qualification.
  • A recent graduate or final-year student who will have completed the qualification before starting employment.
  • Sound knowledge of structural analysis, mechanics, materials, loading, engineering mathematics and design principles.
  • A genuine interest in power transmission infrastructure and overhead line engineering.
  • Basic proficiency in engineering calculation, drafting or modelling tools; exposure to AutoCAD, Civil 3D, GIS, structural analysis software or PLS-CADD is advantageous.
  • Eligibility and willingness to register with ECSA as a Candidate Engineer and work toward professional registration.
  • Willingness to travel to project sites when required.

What we are looking for

You are curious, analytical and eager to translate your academic knowledge into practical engineering solutions. You work carefully, ask thoughtful questions and communicate clearly. You enjoy collaborating across disciplines, take ownership of your learning and are motivated to build specialist expertise in overhead line design while progressing toward professional registration.
