Job Description

About the role

As a Graduate Design Engineer in NPI, you will be part of a large team responsible for imagining what Dyson should create next. Working at the front end of innovation, you will help uncover unmet consumer problems, challenge convention, explore emerging technologies and turn bold, brave ideas into breakthrough product concepts that could shape the future of Dyson.

This role is designed to develop the next generation of Dyson innovators through a structured rotational programme. Over two years, you will complete four 6-month rotations across different NPI teams and categories, gaining experience in invention, concept generation, rapid prototyping, experimentation and early-stage product development before progressing into a long-term career within the function.

As a Graduate Design Engineer in NPI, you will:

  • Generate and develop bold product concepts, features and technology ideas that challenge what consumers expect from Dyson categories.

  • Use consumer insight, market signals and technology opportunities to spot problems worth solving and inspire future invention.

  • Work alongside experienced engineers, designers and technical specialists to create novel solutions to difficult, ambiguous and high-value problems.

  • Identify unmet consumer needs and emerging opportunities that could unlock the next generation of Dyson products.

  • Build functional, physical and digital prototypes that make ideas tangible, testable and real.

  • Explore concepts through experimentation, testing, iteration and fast learning — proving, improving or killing ideas with pace.

  • Bring fresh thinking, curiosity and creative energy to ideation workshops, innovation sprints and concept reviews.

  • Build visual, physical and digital representations of ideas to communicate concepts effectively.

  • Present concepts, evidence and learnings to senior stakeholders, helping shape which opportunities Dyson should pursue next.

  • Develop the technical, creative and commercial judgement needed to turn brave ideas into credible future product opportunities.

  • Rotate across four different NPI teams over a 24-month programme, building a broad understanding of how Dyson creates, tests and develops breakthrough ideas across multiple product categories.

About you

  • Have, or be on track to achieve, a degree in Engineering, Product Design, Innovation, Design Engineering, Science or a related discipline.

  • Be naturally curious about technology, consumers, behaviour and what products could become next.

  • Enjoy generating ideas, challenging assumptions and exploring multiple routes through complex problems.

  • Combine creativity with strong analytical thinking, engineering judgement and a bias for making ideas real.

  • Be comfortable prototyping, experimenting, failing fast and learning through iteration.

  • Have the confidence to share brave ideas, ask sharp questions and contribute actively to collaborative innovation activities.

  • Be adaptable, resilient and excited by the opportunity to work across different teams, categories and stages of invention.

  • Have a passion for invention, engineering and creating products that challenge convention and make everyday problems better.

  • Aspire to build a long-term career within Dyson's NPI function.

About Dyson

Dyson solves real-world problems and creates better products through the application of engineering, science, design and creativity. It is a family-owned, global technology company, founded by Sir James Dyson who remains at the helm alongside his son Jake.

Since inventing the first cyclonic bagless vacuum cleaner, the DC01, Dyson has consistently invested in research and development to improve its products and technologies radically. Dyson offers products across a growing range of areas: floorcare, air purification, robotics, haircare including formulations, lighting, hand drying, and most recently audio. Dyson continues to expand into new areas.

Today, Dyson sells products in more than 80 markets, has 450 Dyson stores worldwide and is available in all major technology and beauty retailers. Dyson has global headquarters in Singapore and major technology campuses in Singapore, the UK, Malaysia, and the Philippines. Its global team of engineers, scientists and software developers are focused on developing technology-enabled products which work better and which people love to use. Key areas of focus have included high-speed electric digital motors, sensing and vision systems, robotics, machine learning and aerodynamics.

Beyond products, to encourage an inventive future, Dyson is also inspiring the next generation of engineers and inventors through the Dyson Institute of Engineering and Technology, the James Dyson Foundation and the James Dyson Award.

The Dyson family applies its problem-solving approach in other fields, and established Dyson Farming in 2012. It is one of the largest farming businesses in the UK, extending to 36,000 acres across Lincolnshire, Oxfordshire, Gloucestershire and Somerset. It is a family-owned enterprise unlike any other, focussed on long-term investment in British farming and the countryside to grow tasty and nutritious food.
