Job Description

This position will provide broad training on collection management tasks, including processing, condition assessment, archival stacks and collections surveys, data and metadata creation, research on archival collections, and other tasks performed by the Collection Management Team.

This position is primarily assigned to University Archives tasks but may float as needed to assist TUSC operations across the department.

Schedule: Part-time – 10 hours/week

Term: 9 months with potential to be extended to 12 months

Pay: $15.00/hour

Location: New Orleans, Tulane’s uptown campus

Job tasks include:

  • Processing (assessing, housing, arranging) physical archival collections
  • Creating archival description and metadata
  • Entering data about archival collections into Excel and ArchivesSpace
  • Conducting collection surveys and creating inventories
  • Historical and biographical research on archival collections
  • Collection cleaning and maintenance tasks
  • Other tasks to support TUSC operations as needed

Qualifications: No archival or library experience is required, and applicants are encouraged to apply with transferable skills.

  • Currently enrolled and taking classes in an MLIS program or other master's program with an archival track (i.e. MS in Public History in an archival track)
  • Ability to work in-person on Tulane’s uptown campus during regularly scheduled work hours for the duration of the assistantship
  • Ability to lift, move, and push 35 lbs or more
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Flexibility to move between tasks as needed
  • Ability to pivot between independent and collaborative work
  • Strong problem-solving and communication skills
  • Data entry experience with inventories, database records, or other related data types preferred
