The Department of Asian Studies was created in 1994 to provide a focus within The University of Texas at Austin for the creation and dissemination of knowledge about Asia, principally East Asia (China, Japan, and Korea) and South Asia (India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Nepal, and Afghanistan). With over forty instructors, the department is one of the largest and most distinguished in the country. We offer courses in nine Asian languages: Bengali, Chinese, Hindi, Japanese, Korean, Malayalam, Sanskrit, Tamil, and Urdu. The Department teaches the histories, cultures, religions, and literatures of Asia, as well as the contemporary issues facing Asian countries from economic and ecological issues to security and ethnic conflicts.
The department houses the Center for East Asian Studies, dedicated to promoting the study of East Asia within The University of Texas. The Center for East Asian Studies houses the JapanLab, a Digital Humanities project. The JapanLab brings students and faculty together to create engaging educational video games about Japanese history, culture, and language for use in Japanese Studies classrooms. You can play games, find lesson plans and resources for teaching, or learn about bringing the JapanLab framework to your institution. We believe that JapanLab offers an exciting and innovative model for Japanese Studies in the twenty-first century. By combining game design with faculty-guided research, the JapanLab model provides an intensive, hands-on learning experience in which students deepen their knowledge of Japan, build practical digital skills, and produce high-quality educational resources for use in the classroom.
In addition, the department also houses the Center for Taiwan Studies. The center brings distinguished visitors from Taiwan to campus, supports student and faculty research on Taiwan, hosts a variety of international symposia and offers courses in language, culture, history and society of Taiwan.
