The Roy G. Perry College of Engineering is seeking two graduate student workers to support the Advanced Rocketry and Satellite Labs. These positions will provide technical, research, mentoring, and operational support for student projects related to advanced rocketry, satellite systems, CubeSat development, embedded systems, testing, data analysis, lab operations, documentation, and outreach.
Responsibilities:
- Support the development, setup, and operation of the Advanced Rocketry and Satellite Labs. Assist with rocket design, modeling, assembly, testing, documentation, safety procedures, and launch preparation.
- Support satellite and CubeSat-related activities, including subsystem development, sensors, communications, power systems, structures, embedded systems, software, data acquisition, and testing. Support research activities, technical reports, data collection, data analysis, literature reviews, presentations, and project documentation
- Provide technical guidance and day-to-day support to undergraduate student workers assigned to the labs.
- Assist with lab equipment setup, calibration, inventory, maintenance, and safe operation.
- Assist with prototyping, fabrication, 3D printing, soldering, wiring, electronics assembly, mechanical assembly, and troubleshooting.
- Support workshops, demonstrations, student training sessions, industry visits, outreach programs, and K-12 STEM engagement activities. Coordinate with faculty, staff, graduate students, undergraduate workers, and external partners as needed.
- Help develop lab manuals, training materials, standard operating procedures, safety documents, and project guides.
- Maintain a clean, organized, safe, and professional lab environment.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Required Education & Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree in applicable field.
- Presently enrolled at Prairie View A&M University for at least nine (9) graduate semester credit hours during the term in which the work is to be done.
- Must be in good academic standing (SAP) as demonstrated through your college; minimum 2.0 GPA
- For work eligibility during a summer term, a student must be enrolled for at least six (6) graduate or undergraduate semester credit hours during the term in which the work is to be done or preregistered at least six (6) undergraduate semester hours or nine (9) graduate semester hours for the upcoming fall term.
Required Qualifications:
- Must be currently enrolled as a graduate student at Prairie View A&M University.
- Must be in good academic standing.
- Must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident, green card holder.
- Must be willing to complete all required safety, laboratory, and university training.
- Must have strong technical, organizational, and communication skills.
- Must be able to work independently and provide guidance to undergraduate student workers.
- Must demonstrate professionalism, dependability, attention to detail, and a commitment to lab safety.
Preferred Education and Experience:
- Graduate study in engineering, computer science, engineering technology, physics, mathematics, or a closely related STEM field.
- Interest or experience in aerospace systems, rocketry, CubeSats, satellite systems, robotics, embedded systems, communications, controls, electronics, manufacturing, AI, data analysis, or systems engineering.
- Experience with one or more of the following is preferred: CAD, 3D printing, MATLAB, Python, C/C++, Arduino, Raspberry Pi, FPGA systems, sensors, circuit design, soldering, mechanical tools, lab instrumentation, simulation tools, or technical documentation.
- Prior experience in research, senior design, competition teams, laboratory work, student mentoring, or technical project management is a plus.
Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Ability to support hands-on engineering projects from concept through testing.
- Ability to troubleshoot technical problems and document solutions.
- Ability to mentor undergraduate students in a laboratory setting.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Strong organizational and project coordination skills.
- Ability to follow and enforce lab safety procedures.
- Ability to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines.
