Teaching assistants (TA) in CSD at Saint Xavier will have the opportunity to participate in a wide range of activities tailored to the course assignment. As a TA, the student will gain practical experience in supporting classroom instruction, facilitating student learning, and assisting with course administration. The emphasis will be placed on developing pedagogical skills, understanding diverse learning needs, and fostering an inclusive educational environment. This is ideal for students aspiring to hold future roles as educators, researchers, or clinical supervisors in academia or educational settings within the field of communication disorders.
This student employment opportunity supports the development of skills aligned with the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE) Career Readiness Competencies. Through this role, students will strengthen the following competencies:
Communication: Students build communication skills by practicing clear, respectful, and professional verbal, written, and interpersonal communication in a workplace setting.
Critical Thinking: Students build critical thinking skills by applying judgment, solving problems, prioritizing tasks, maintaining accuracy, and using feedback to improve their work.
TAs are responsible for assisting faculty with teaching and administrative tasks, including but not limited to:
• Assisting faculty with classroom instruction, records, and assignments
• Leading discussion sections (if TA is available during class)
• Meeting with students during TA Student Support Hours/Review Sessions (plan for 1 hr /week)
• Conferencing with students individually or in small groups
• Record an audio sample for class use
• Delivering one-course lecture or guest lectures (if TA is available during class)
• Leading one group project or discussion (if the TA is available during class)
• Assist with grading transcriptions (answer key provided)
• Track students’ submissions on Canvas and report to faculty
• Preparing in-class activity materials
• Recording and calculating grades
• Providing feedback on assignments
• Enforcing laboratory rules and procedures
• Proctoring examinations
• Taking attendance or monitoring participation
• Preparing and distributing course materials (if the TA is available during class)
• Ordering course textbooks and monitoring supply
• Meeting with faculty 1x/week
• Completing administrative tasks (e.g., photocopying, printing)
• Identifying evidence-based resources that can support course content
• Communicate student concerns/needs with faculty

The Graduate Assistant will support foundational undergraduate coursework in phonetics and language development. Responsibilities include grading assignments, assisting with skill-based learning (e.g., transcription, analysis), supporting in-class activities, and holding office hours. Strong attention to detail and foundational knowledge in speech and language development are required.
