Students in Kindergarten through Grade 12 attend school for a 200-day academic year and participate in an extended school day that provides approximately one additional hour of instruction compared to traditional public schools. Mystic Valley Regional Charter School is seeking a knowledgeable, enthusiastic, and dedicated Grades 7–12 English Teacher to join our faculty. The successful candidate will inspire a love of literature, writing, and critical thinking while delivering a rigorous, classical English curriculum.
English teachers at MVRCS implement the Core Knowledge Sequence and Great Books curriculum, fostering close reading, analytical writing, and thoughtful discussion. High school teachers may also have opportunities to teach courses within the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme.
The ideal candidate is passionate about English language arts, committed to academic excellence, and eager to collaborate with colleagues to ensure exceptional student outcomes.
Key Responsibilities
- Deliver engaging, rigorous instruction in English Language Arts for students in Grades 7–12.
- Implement the established English curriculum, including the Core Knowledge Sequence, Great Books program, and, when applicable, International Baccalaureate (IB) coursework.
- Teach up to five classes per day while maintaining high academic expectations and instructional excellence.
- Develop lesson plans with clear learning objectives that promote critical thinking, literary analysis, and effective written communication.
- Assess student learning through a variety of formative and summative assessments, providing timely and meaningful feedback.
- Prepare and submit report cards, progress reports, and other required student documentation.
- Administer school and state assessments as directed by the English Department Chair and school leadership.
- Maintain a structured, respectful classroom environment that supports student learning and aligns with the school's discipline model.
- Collaborate with English Department colleagues through weekly meetings focused on curriculum planning, instructional best practices, and student achievement.
- Communicate effectively with students, families, and colleagues to support student success.
- Participate in faculty meetings, professional development, and other school-wide initiatives.
- Perform additional duties as assigned by the English Department Chair or school administration.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in English or a closely related field required.
- Massachusetts teaching license in English (5–12) preferred or eligibility to obtain licensure.
- Successful completion of applicable MTEL examinations within one year of employment.
- Strong knowledge of English literature, composition, grammar, and writing instruction.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Demonstrated ability to analyze student performance data and adjust instruction to meet student needs.
- Strong classroom management and organizational skills.
- Ability to build positive, professional relationships with students, families, and colleagues.
- Commitment to collaboration, continuous professional growth, and academic excellence.
- Experience with classical education, Core Knowledge, Great Books, or International Baccalaureate programs is preferred but not required.
