Grader Operator (Heavy Equipment Operator)

GrizzlyTrek is hiring experienced grader operators to join our value-added client's team on heavy civil earthworks projects in the Fort McMurray region. Wages start at $35.00 to $40.00 an hour, you fly in and out of Calgary or Edmonton, and camp room and board are covered. This is long term work, not one spread that ends at freeze up.
Our client is an established heavy civil earthworks contractor with more than 40 years of completed projects and a crew of over 1,000. They keep multiple projects running at once, so operators who perform have the opportunity to move to the next project as each one wraps.

• Run 14M and 24H class graders on earth moving and grading, stripping overburden, stacking and stockpiling
• Build roads, oilfield leases and pads to project specifications and grade plans
• Crown, ditch and shape road surfaces so they shed water and keep haul traffic moving
• Cut and maintain access roads, and support culvert installation and reclamation work
• Finish and trim to spec, working from grade plans, stakes or GPS machine control
• Complete routine equipment inspections: tires, fluids, lights and brakes, and report defects early
• Run a 2-way radio and take part in pre-job safety meetings, FLHAs and JSAs every shift

• Minimum 3 years of recent grader time, 14M and 24H class, in heavy civil earthworks, road building, construction or mining
• Able to hold grade and carry a crown on your own, working from technical specifications and grade plans
• Stripping, stacking, stockpiling and reclamation experience, on all ground conditions including soft ground
• Ice road construction experience
• Valid Class 5 licence, CSA approved boots (minimum 6 inch, fully laceable), and current tickets: CSO, BSO, CSTS-09 or OSSA Regional; Intermediate First Aid with CPR and AED; H2S Alive; Bear Awareness (in class); Ground Disturbance
• Able to live in camp on rotation, repeatedly lift up to 50 lbs, and complete the pre-employment requirements below

• Strong finish and trim ability
• GPS or laser grade control experience (Trimble or Topcon)
• Experience building oilfield leases and pads, and a current oil sands site orientation on file

• Successful completion of Alcohol and Drug Screening
• Successful completion of comprehensive Fitness-to-Work Assessment. This assessment is job-related, focusing on the physical demands and safety sensitive nature of the work, and is conducted in accordance with Alberta Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) requirements and the Alberta Human Rights Act. The assessment will cover:
  • Health History Review: A thorough examination of the candidate's health background.
  • Pre-Medical Evaluation: Measurements such as height, weight, blood pressure, and oxygen saturation.
  • Musculoskeletal Examination: A head-to-toe assessment to identify any limitations or concerns related to physical health.
  • Critical Strength and Mobility Test: A series of tasks assessing lifting, carrying, and positional abilities aligned with the job's physical demands (up to 50 lbs).
• Worker to provide valid safety training tickets, a valid driver's licence, and CSA approved safety boots (minimum 6 inch, fully laceable)

• Rotational schedule of up to 12 hours a day, days or nights as required and subject to change with project needs
• Camp accommodation with room and board provided, plus flights from Calgary or Edmonton
• Outdoor work in all weather year round, with physical labour duties off the machine as required
• Noise and vibration on the job

An operator who can finish and trim is the one the foreman asks for by name. The range starts at $35.00 to $40.00 and where you land in it comes down to seat time you can verify, not a number talked down after the interview. Flights out of Calgary or Edmonton and camp room and board are covered, so the rate is what you keep instead of what is left after travel, rooms and meals. Required orientations and assessments are paid at $18.00 an hour, so the days before you get in the seat are not on your own dime. And the client keeps projects running, so this is long term work rather than one job and a layoff.
Pay is a gross hourly rate before deductions.
