- PURPOSE OF THE JOB
Southeastern’s Government/Prison Financial Aid Office Assistant is responsible for helping process federal and state financial aid, focusing particularly on students in Southeastern’s Prison Education Programs (PEP). This includes helping students complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA®), processing FAFSAs® and helping students correct errors, and adhering to federal and state regulations.
- ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Administer Government Financial Aid, especially the Federal Pell Grant and North Carolina Need Based Scholarship.
- - Complete training from the Department of Education on Federal Pell Grants
- - Maintain working knowledge of policies and procedures for the Pell Grant and North Carolina Need Based Scholarship
- - Assist incarcerated students with completing the FAFSA® and NC Residency Determination Service (RDS)
- - Process incarcerated students’ FAFSA® forms
- - Confirm student eligibility, awarding, and disbursing funds
- Assist the Government Financial Aid Coordinator
- - Assist students with questions related to Government Aid
- - Help the Government Financial Aid Coordinator process Federal and State Aid for the entire student body
- - Participate in monthly and bi-annual reconciliation for Federal and State funds
- - Create and maintain pertinent information and reporting for annual audits
- - Help process other federal and state aid that becomes available
- Communicate key information to students and institutional offices
- - Maintain a friendly, welcoming work environment that fosters in-person engagement with students and allows for quick responses to email and phone calls
- - Identify and prioritize problems; perform research and offer solutions, options, and strategies
- - Represent the Financial Aid team in a professional, knowledgeable, and welcoming manner
- - Gain a general knowledge of institutional and government financial aid
- Assist the Prison Program office with financial aid related tasks
- Assist in the development of overall office strategy and culture
- Participate in all assigned meetings; provide new ideas and support
- OTHER DUTIES & REPONSIBILITIES
Complete training as required and assist in the training of staff as requested, including yearly PREA training
