Job Description

Objective

Client is seeking an experienced technical writer to develop technical documentation for a U.S. government training simulator contract. The immediate priority is three draft reports built from engineering data, existing documentation, government requirements, and reference examples.

The writer will turn technical input from mechanical engineers into clear, organized, requirements-driven reports, allowing the engineering team to stay focused on engineering work.

Profile Overview

The ideal candidate has technical-writing experience supporting government or defense contracts, preferably the U.S. Army. Direct experience with Safety Assessment Reports, Health Hazard Assessment Reports, and Level of Repair Analysis Reports is strongly preferred.

Candidates should understand Army/DoD documentation expectations and be comfortable working with engineers, government requirements, templates, and technical source material.

Scope

The initial three reports are estimated at approximately 80 hours, although the workload could range from roughly ~80-120 hours.

The preferred start date is October 5, with draft submission targeted for October 15.

Following government review, additional work is expected in November/early December and January to address comments and finalize the reports. Potential support through May may include technical manuals, training materials, editing, and related documentation.

Workload will fluctuate, so flexibility is important.

Responsibilities

• Develop three technical reports using engineering data and SME input.
• Prepare Safety Assessment and Health Hazard Assessment documentation as required.
• Translate complex engineering information into clear, structured reports.
• Follow Army/DoD requirements, instructions, templates, and examples.
• Collaborate with mechanical engineers to gather and clarify technical information.
• Review and adapt relevant existing documentation.
• Incorporate customer/government feedback into revisions and final deliverables.
• Potentially support technical manuals, training materials, and related documentation.
• Track time and progress clearly while working efficiently against tight deadlines.

Skills and Qualifications

• Professional technical-writing experience.
• Government or defense-contract documentation experience.
• U.S. Army technical-writing experience strongly preferred.
• Safety Assessment Report and/or Health Hazard Assessment Report, and Level of Repair Analysis Report experience highly preferred.
• Ability to synthesize engineering data and SME input into polished documentation.
• Experience working from government requirements, templates, forms, and examples.
• Strong technical editing, organization, and attention to detail.
• Ability to collaborate effectively with engineers and work independently.
• Flexibility to accommodate changing workloads and urgent deadlines.
• Technical manual and training-material experience is a plus.
• Sound judgment when handling confidential or sensitive materials.

The client is open to appropriate AI-assisted workflows when useful for drafting from supplied data and examples, provided confidentiality, accuracy, and project requirements are maintained.
