Job Description

About the Church

Founded in 1831, Government Street Presbyterian Church is a downtown, mission-minded congregation known for its historic Greek Revival architecture and exceptional music programs. The church describes itself as a welcoming, traditional church family and has been led by Rev. Rebekah Abel Lamar since 2019. The campus occupies a quarter block in Mobile, serving a membership of 350 with a deep commitment to Christian education across all generations.

About the Ministry

The Christian education ministry at GSPC oversees faith formation from birth through adulthood, currently serving approximately 29 children and 27 youth. While the ministry features strong assets like a beloved VBS, a traditional Sunday School, and annual youth trips to Montreat, it is currently in a "rebuilding" phase focused on stabilizing attendance and deepening parental engagement.

The Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate is a hope-filled, enthusiastic, and relational leader who can serve as a "visionary architect" to stabilize and grow the church’s faith formation programs. They should be a self-starter with a passion for kids and families, capable of navigating a diverse theological environment while recruiting and empowering a fresh team of volunteers.

Key Responsibilities

  • Children’s Ministry Revitalization: Develop and maintain deep relational connections with children and parents while implementing a strategy for growth and "pipeline" formation.

  • Staff & Volunteer Supervision: Oversee and coach the part-time youth coordinator and manage the recruitment and training of all CE volunteers.

  • Adult Faith Formation: Partner with the CE committee to select curriculum and execute a comprehensive plan for adult spiritual growth.

  • Worship Integration: Actively integrate children and youth into the full life of the church, including leadership roles and liturgical engagement.

  • Administration & Communication: Serve as the primary voice to the congregation for all formation opportunities and participate in collaborative staff leadership.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent experience) in Christian education, theology, or a related field.

  • 2–3 years of leadership experience in children's ministry is preferred.

  • Commitment to Reformed theology and the mission of the PCUSA.

  • Proficiency in technical tools such as Canva, Google Docs, and Realm church management software.

  • Strong organizational and communication skills with the ability to engage effectively across all generations.

About Ministry Architects

For a long time, most ministry leaders have assumed they had to choose. There's been this choice between disruptive innovation or sustainable systems. Today, smart churches are realizing that their survival depends on not choosing, but embracing both creativity and structure as partners in the same dance. Our group is made up of a peculiar collection of radically practical visionaries, intensely committed to help you build healthy systems that create space for deliberate, often disruptive, innovation.

Ministry Architects has partnered with over 1,000 churches from 24 different denominations, as well as faith-based organizations and institutions of high learning all across the country. Whether big or small, Ministry Architects can guide your community through strategic planning, conduct staff searches, build sustainable ministries, and reach all generations.

Thriving, sustainable ministries can never be built on a parade of young, enthusiastic leaders try to piece together a disjointed collection of ideas from popular models, books, and seminars.

At Ministry Architects, we believe there is a better way than one-size-fits-all training events and quick-fix searches for superstar staffers. It all starts with building intentionally. So like architects, we don't tell churches or organizations what they want to build. We start by listening and create a blueprint of exactly how they can move from where they are to where they want to be. And then, we walk alongside them to make sure that they can build the kind of infrastructure they'll need to support the ministries they believe God is calling them to lead.
