Job Description

The Golf Maintenance Manager is responsible for leading and managing the Greenkeeping team and all golf course maintenance operations to ensure the highest standards of course conditioning, presentation, safety, and playability. This role oversees the maintenance of golf course turf, landscaping, irrigation systems, practice facilities, and surrounding grounds while ensuring compliance with Marriott Golf Standards and sound agronomic practices.

The Golf Maintenance Manager is accountable for delivering exceptional guest experiences, maintaining operational efficiency, managing departmental financial performance, developing team members, and preserving the overall quality and reputation of the golf course.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

I. Golf Course & Grounds Management

  • Lead and oversee all golf course maintenance and grounds operations, including greens, tees, fairways, bunkers, roughs, practice facilities, landscaping, and related areas.
  • Conduct routine inspections and course tours to assess turf conditions, presentation standards, and maintenance requirements.
  • Develop and implement maintenance programs that support optimal course conditions throughout the year.
  • Ensure all course maintenance activities align with Marriott Golf Standards and industry best agronomic practices.
  • Coordinate course improvement projects, renovations, and development initiatives as required.
  • Monitor weather conditions and seasonal variations to ensure maintenance plans are adjusted appropriately.
  • Ensure irrigation systems, drainage systems, equipment, and maintenance infrastructure are operating effectively.
  • Minimize disruption to golfers while maintaining the highest standards of course conditioning and presentation.

II. Quality Assurance & Course Standards

  • Ensure the golf course consistently meets established quality, presentation, and playability standards.
  • Develop and implement maintenance schedules and inspection programs for all course areas.
  • Monitor turf health, landscaping quality, bunker conditions, and overall course aesthetics.
  • Ensure all maintenance practices support long-term course sustainability and agronomic health.
  • Implement corrective actions and continuous improvement initiatives to enhance course conditions.
  • Maintain detailed records of agronomic programs, course conditions, and maintenance activities.
  • Promote a culture of excellence, attention to detail, and pride in course presentation.

III. Financial Management & Budget Control

  • Develop and manage departmental operating and capital expenditure budgets.
  • Monitor and control labor costs, inventory expenses, equipment maintenance costs, and operational expenditures.
  • Manage expenditures related to golf course maintenance, landscaping, irrigation, and grounds operations.
  • Analyze departmental performance and identify opportunities to improve efficiencies and reduce costs.
  • Ensure inventory levels are maintained appropriately while controlling waste and unnecessary expenditure.
  • Protect and maintain the security, condition, and utilization of departmental equipment and assets.
  • Review controllable expenses including labor, grass seed, fertilizers, chemicals, uniforms, utilities, and consumables.
  • Support the achievement of budgeted financial targets and operational performance goals.

IV. Guest Experience & Service Excellence

  • Champion exceptional guest experiences through superior course conditions and presentation.
  • Maintain a visible presence on the golf course and interact with guests when appropriate.
  • Ensure course maintenance activities are conducted with minimal disruption to golfers and visitors.
  • Work closely with Golf Operations teams to address guest concerns and maintain service excellence.
  • Review guest feedback and implement corrective actions and improvement plans as necessary.
  • Foster a guest-focused culture that supports Marriott's commitment to service excellence.
  • Empower team members to deliver exceptional customer service.
  • Strive to continuously improve golf course quality and overall guest satisfaction.

V. Leadership & Team Development

  • Provide leadership, direction, coaching, and support to the Greenkeeping team.
  • Establish performance standards, goals, and expectations for all direct reports and associates.
  • Foster a culture of teamwork, accountability, respect, and continuous improvement.
  • Develop individual training plans and career development opportunities for team members.
  • Conduct regular coaching sessions, performance reviews, and development discussions.
  • Recognize and celebrate team achievements and contributions.
  • Lead by example and promote professionalism, safety, and operational excellence.
  • Ensure team members are equipped with the skills and knowledge required to perform effectively.

VI. Human Resources & Talent Management

  • Participate in recruitment, interviewing, selection, onboarding, and training of Greenkeeping associates.
  • Maintain appropriate staffing levels to support operational requirements and course standards.
  • Ensure employee performance management processes are conducted effectively and consistently.
  • Address performance concerns through coaching, mentoring, and corrective action when appropriate.
  • Promote open communication and maintain an effective open-door leadership approach.
  • Utilize employee feedback and engagement initiatives to improve workplace culture.
  • Ensure all associates are treated fairly, respectfully, and equitably.
  • Support succession planning and the development of future leaders within the department.

VII. Communication & Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Develop strong working relationships with Golf Operations, Recreation, Engineering, Finance, Human Resources, and other hotel departments.
  • Communicate operational priorities, maintenance schedules, and course conditions effectively.
  • Lead departmental meetings, briefings, and training programs.
  • Provide regular updates and reports to golf and hotel leadership.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders to support golf events, tournaments, and special activities.
  • Ensure timely communication regarding operational challenges, weather impacts, and maintenance projects.
  • Support property-wide objectives through effective teamwork and collaboration.

VIII. Compliance, Safety & Environmental Management

  • Ensure compliance with Marriott policies, golf course operating standards, and local regulatory requirements.
  • Promote and maintain a safe working environment for associates, guests, and contractors.
  • Ensure proper handling, storage, and application of fertilizers, chemicals, fuels, and other maintenance materials.
  • Monitor workplace safety procedures and ensure compliance with environmental regulations.
  • Maintain accurate records relating to safety inspections, maintenance activities, chemical applications, and operational compliance.
  • Ensure all machinery, equipment, and maintenance facilities operate safely and efficiently.
  • Support sustainability initiatives, environmental stewardship programs, and responsible resource management practices.
  • Implement risk management strategies to minimize operational disruptions and safety incidents.

Education and Experience

  • Diploma or Degree in Business Administration, Golf Course Management, or a related field preferred.
  • Minimum 3-5 years of experience in Golf Course Maintenance, Greenkeeping, Turf Management, or a related field, including supervisory responsibilities.
  • Strong understanding of turfgrass management, irrigation systems, landscaping practices, and agronomic principles.
  • Experience managing golf course maintenance budgets, labor costs, inventory, and capital projects.
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain championship-quality golf course conditions and presentation standards.
  • Knowledge of golf course construction, renovation, and drainage systems is advantageous.
  • Strong leadership, coaching, mentoring, and team development capabilities.
  • Excellent communication, problem-solving, and organizational skills.
  • Knowledge of workplace health and safety regulations, chemical handling, and environmental compliance requirements.
  • Ability to analyze operational and financial performance data and make informed business decisions.
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including weekends, public holidays, and varied schedules as required by golf course operations.
