Job Description

We're building aircraft that fly faster, further, and to space.

Hypersonix is an Australian aerospace engineering and advanced manufacturing company building hydrogen-powered scramjet aircraft. We work at the bleeding edge of hypersonic technology, delivering aircraft that fly faster, reach further, and open new pathways to space - and we're a small, highly capable team doing work that genuinely matters.

The Opportunity

As a GNC Engineer II, you’ll take ownership of guidance, navigation and control engineering of Hypersonix flight vehicles. You’ll develop and verify GNC algorithms, building and maintaining physics-based vehicle simulation models, and support integration and test of GNC subsystems through development, qualification and flight. You’ll be a key member of the team, delivering on complex projects as well as providing mentorship and guidance to junior engineers.

This is a unique opportunity to work with cutting-edge hypersonic technology and make a real impact in a high-growth environment. If you’re passionate, innovative and want true autonomy to do your best work, we’d love to hear from you!

What you’ll be doing

Responsibilities include:

  • Design, tune and verify GNC algorithms across all mission phases – boost, separation, glide, cruise
  • Develop and evolve high-fidelity 6‑DoF simulation models to support algorithm validation and flight software integration
  • Conduct Monte Carlo and sensitivity analyses to ensure performance and robustness under uncertainty
  • Lead and execute MIL, SIL and HIL test campaigns, defining scenarios, instrumentation and success criteria
  • Integrate and characterise navigation sensors (IMU, GNSS, air data, optical), including calibration and alignment
  • Analyse and correlate flight and test data with simulation, continuously improving model accuracy and confidence
  • Own GNC requirements and engineering deliverables, contributing to ICDs and ensuring audit-ready documentation
  • Support integration, anomaly resolution and design reviews, influencing key engineering decisions

Life at Hypersonix

We're a 60-person company moving fast in one of the most demanding fields in aerospace. The pace is fast, expectations are high and the environment is constantly evolving. The people who thrive here are energised by that — not unsettled by it.

You’ll thrive here if you

  • Take ownership of your work and keep things moving, even when the picture isn’t complete
  • Care about doing things well and getting them done — and learn to balance both
  • Stay calm and constructive when priorities shift.

What you’ll bring

To hit the ground running in this role, you’ll need:

  • Bachelor’s degree in aerospace engineering, electrical engineering, mechatronics or a related engineering field
  • 5+ years’ experience in GNC, control systems, flight dynamics or vehicle simulation in aerospace/defence
  • Strong grounding in control theory, estimation (Kalman filtering) and 6‑DoF modelling
  • Hands-on expertise with MATLAB/Simulink for control design, simulation and auto-code generation
  • Proficiency in C/C++ (or similar) for embedded or flight-critical software
  • Proven track record developing and validating control laws through MIL/SIL/HIL testing
  • Solid understanding of systems engineering processes within regulated or high-reliability environments
  • Ability to deliver high-quality work on schedule, communicate complex ideas clearly, and operate effectively in multidisciplinary teams
  • Ability to obtain any applicable security clearance or background checks.
  • Right to live and work in Australia.

Bonus points for:

  • Postgraduate qualification (master’s or PhD) in GNC, control systems, flight dynamics, estimation or a closely related field.
  • Experience in hypersonic, launch vehicle, missile, UAV or high-performance flight vehicle programmes.
  • Experience with aeroelastic effects on GNC and reduced-order model integration with flight dynamics.

Ready to Fly Faster?

Benefits include:

  • Competitive salary
  • Equity participation
  • Flexible working – we care about output, not hours
  • Funded Professional development
  • Confidential Employee Assistance Program

About Hypersonix Launch Systems

Hypersonix Launch Systems builds and operates hydrogen-fuelled scramjet powered autonomous aircraft for a range of government, defence, aerospace, and commercial customers.

The first hypersonic flyer to launch is DART AE (Additive Engineering). DART AE is a 3.5 metre long hypersonic aircraft that is powered by a single SPARTAN scramjet engine and makes significant use of 3-D printed high temperature metal alloys. It uses hydrogen fuel and will fly at Mach 7.

The launch is part of the HyCAT program by the Defense Innovation Unit. Hypersonix was the first company to be selected for the program in March 2023, targeting a first launch for Q1 2026 in the United States.

Hypersonix is revolutionizing hypersonic flight technology with a cloud-based software-as-a-service digital twin. By combining extensive knowledge and data from atmospheric flight tests, this virtual replica accurately predicts real-world outcomes. It allows rapid and repetitive testing of materials, designs, manufacturing techniques and enables global 3D printing of components through secure additive manufacturing.

Hypersonix product road map also includes VISR, a high-speed suborbital Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) and rapid airfreight flyer demonstrator as well as Delta Velos Orbiter for small satellite launch in a non-ballistic trajectory.
