Job Description

Data Center Construction Manager

We are seeking an experienced Data Center Construction Manager to oversee the end-to-end delivery of mission-critical data center projects. You will manage general contractors, MEP subcontractors, and commissioning agents to ensure facilities are delivered on schedule, within budget, and to specification. The ideal candidate combines deep technical expertise in critical facility systems with strong project leadership skills, enabling seamless handoff to operations teams.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead day-to-day construction management of new data center builds and retrofits, including ground-up campuses, shell-and-core fit-outs, and critical infrastructure upgrades.
  • Manage RFP/RFQ processes, bid leveling, and contract award for general contractors and specialty subcontractors (structural, civil, electrical, mechanical, fire suppression, and low-voltage).
  • Coordinate with design teams (architects, structural/MEP engineers) to resolve field conflicts, issue RFIs, and manage design submittals and shop drawings.
  • Develop and maintain master project schedules (P6 or MS Project), tracking milestones for sitework, steel erection, MEP rough-in, commissioning, and IT readiness.
  • Oversee commissioning and integrated systems testing (IST) for power systems (UPS, generators, switchgear, PDUs), cooling infrastructure (CRAC/CRAH, chillers, cooling towers, liquid cooling), and life-safety systems.
  • Manage project budgets from $50M to $500M+, including monthly cost reporting, change order evaluation, and forecasting CapEx/OpEx through project closeout.
  • Enforce EHS compliance on site, conducting daily safety walks, toolbox talks, and incident investigations in alignment with OSHA standards and corporate safety programs.
  • Coordinate vendor qualification and equipment procurement for critical path items (transformers, generators, UPS systems, cooling equipment) to mitigate supply chain risks.
  • Serve as primary liaison between ownership, design consultants, contractors, and local authorities having jurisdiction (AHJ) for permitting, inspections, and Certificate of Occupancy.
  • Mentor and supervise construction coordinators, site engineers, and owner's representative staff embedded on project sites.

Preferred Skills

  • Experience with hyperscale or colocation data center campuses exceeding 50MW critical IT load.
  • Knowledge of sustainable construction practices including LEED certification, water usage effectiveness (WUE), and energy modeling for PUE optimization.
  • Background in modular or prefabricated data center construction (e.g., skid-mounted power, containerized cooling).
  • Familiarity with liquid cooling infrastructure: direct liquid cooling (DLC), rear-door heat exchangers, and immersion cooling systems.
  • Experience with BIM coordination (Revit, Navisworks) for clash detection and construction sequencing.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's/Master’s degree in Construction Management, Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field; PMP or CCM certification preferred.
  • 7+ years of construction management experience, with at least 3 years on mission-critical or data center projects in a direct management capacity.
  • Demonstrated expertise in critical facility systems: medium-voltage switchgear, diesel generators, UPS systems, HVAC/chiller plants, and fire suppression.
  • Proficiency in project scheduling tools (Primavera P6, MS Project) and construction management platforms (Procore, e-Builder, or equivalent).
  • Strong command of commissioning processes including Level 1–5 testing, IST, and DCIM/BMS integration validation.
  • Familiarity with data center standards and guidelines: Uptime Institute Tier Classifications, TIA-942, ASHRAE TC 9.9, and NFPA 75/76.
  • Proven ability to manage multi-prime contract structures and navigate complex stakeholder environments across ownership, design, and contractor teams.
  • Willingness to travel to site visits, project kickoffs, and commissioning events.
