Job Description
Location: Hyderabad/ Pune/ Bangalore
If you’re looking for further opportunities to develop your career, take the next step in fulfilling your potential right here at HSBC.
HSBC is one of the largest banking and financial services organizations in the world, with operations in 58 countries and territories. We aim to be where the growth is, enabling businesses to thrive and economies to prosper, and, ultimately, helping people to fulfil their hopes and realize their ambitions.
We are currently seeking an experienced professional to join our team in the role of Global Sanctions Technology Executive, GPS
The Opportunity
Own the strategy, integrated delivery, modernisation and reliable operation of HSBC’s global sanctions screening capabilities within the GPS value stream in Global Payments Solutions, with explicit end-to-end technology accountability for Name Screening and Transaction Screening. The role leads approximately 200 colleagues and strategic partners supporting around 68 million screened transactions each month across 48 markets, together with the global party and record populations subject to continuous Name Screening, and provides a single point of technology leadership for roadmap execution, production readiness, resilience uplift, service transition and safe change.
Translate the Screening Future State Architecture into controlled, measurable platform outcomes, bringing Name Screening and Transaction Screening together within a coherent Screening-as-a-Service strategy. Move fragmented, duplicative and vendor-centric utilities toward standard interfaces, common reusable services, consolidated screening data, end-to-end observability, consistent adjudication and governed automation, while retaining the distinct risk, regulatory, criticality, latency, resilience, geography and data-residency requirements of each screening type. The strategic direction is to shift from high-volume alert processing to outcome-led risk protection: preventing access or transactions outside risk appetite, improving true-positive detection, reducing false positives and manual intervention, and minimising unnecessary customer friction.
What you’ll do
- Strategy, roadmap and investment: Own the multi-year global sanctions technology strategy and integrated roadmap for Name Screening and Transaction Screening, aligned to Group strategy, financial-crime risk appetite, regulatory expectations and the CBCC Future State Architecture. Set priorities, funding and sequencing to create a coherent Screening-as-a-Service utility, standardise the global operating model and shared building blocks, and make explicit build, buy, partner and retire decisions based on risk effectiveness, resilience, customer outcomes, strategic control and total cost.
- Name Screening and Transaction Screening transformation: Lead progressive modernisation across both screening domains. For Name Screening, advance globally consistent, model-driven continuous screening triggered by onboarding, party change, list change and risk events, with local variation only where regulation or data and hosting residency require it. For Transaction Screening, deliver high-throughput, real-time and 24x7 capabilities with regional segregation, scalable capacity, graceful degradation and no uncontrolled bypass, while strengthening tuning, layered auto-discounting and rapid response to geopolitical or regulatory change.
- Architecture, engineering and release excellence: Establish secure, scalable patterns across cloud and hybrid deployment, Kubernetes, Java/Spring, APIs, event streaming, distributed databases, caching, CI/CD and infrastructure automation. Embed automated testing, configuration management, observability, performance engineering and evidence-based release readiness, while meeting data and hosting residency requirements and maximising global standards and reuse.
- Risk effectiveness and control governance: Maintain zero tolerance for sanctions breaches and strengthen the effectiveness of Name Screening and Transaction Screening in line with policy, regulatory expectations and risk appetite. Improve true-positive detection while evidencing reductions in false positives; govern lists, policies, models, algorithms, filters, thresholds, routing, tuning and discounting through validation, impact analysis, segregation of duties, maker-checker controls, reconciliation, auditability and global standards with local divergence by approved exception.
- Service readiness, resilience and production outcomes: Own availability, capacity, performance, recoverability and continuity for mission-critical sanctions services, including evolution toward 24x7 transaction and continuous name screening. Ensure every material change is supportable and recoverable, with production-like testing, viable back-out, clear handover, post-implementation verification and sustainable remediation of incident, service-review and control-assessment actions.
- Data, observability, automation and AI: Create a trusted, consolidated screening data asset spanning Name Screening and Transaction Screening, with strong quality, lineage, completeness, reconciliation and end-to-end tracking from screening event to risk outcome. Use real-time analytics and transparent management information to support assurance and regulatory evidence. Govern AI-assisted matching, entity resolution, triage, prioritisation, recommendations and layered auto-discounting with human accountability, explainability, validation, drift monitoring, feedback loops and safe fallback arrangements, progressively moving toward near-zero-touch operations where the control evidence supports it.
- Customer and operational outcomes: Embed Name Screening and Transaction Screening controls seamlessly into customer onboarding, servicing and payment journeys. Apply risk-based segmentation, improve data capture at source and provide predictable turnaround and proactive status information. Reduce duplicate screens, repeat alerts, manual adjudication and unnecessary requests for information, while ensuring Financial Crime and Operations have the data needed to make timely decisions to reject, block, freeze, escalate or exit in accordance with policy.
- Leadership, governance and stakeholder alignment: Lead and develop a globally distributed, inclusive engineering organisation; own workforce shape, investment priorities, standards, talent and succession plans. Establish transparent, decision-oriented governance across Financial Crime, Operations, Global Businesses, regions, Group Data, Foundations Technology, Architecture, Cybersecurity, Risk, Audit, Finance and Procurement; manage suppliers against measurable delivery, quality, security and service-readiness outcomes.
Measures of success
- Predictable delivery of the Screening-as-a-Service roadmap for Name Screening and Transaction Screening against approved milestones, investment and benefit commitments, with greater reuse of common capabilities and less duplication across screening types, regions and products.
- Measurably improved risk effectiveness across Name Screening and Transaction Screening: stronger true-positive detection and designation-to-action outcomes, controlled reductions in false positives, duplicate alerts, manual adjudication and repeated customer outreach, and faster risk-led decisioning.
- Resilient, secure and scalable screening services, including continuous Name Screening and real-time 24x7 Transaction Screening, with improved availability, throughput, recovery performance and capacity for peak volumes, list events and regulatory change, and reduced change failure, high-severity incidents and customer disruption.
- Reliable data, observability and regulatory evidence, with demonstrable governance of lists, models, policies, filters, algorithms, AI and configuration changes.
- A sustainable, inclusive and high-performing global technology organisation and effective strategic supplier ecosystem.
What you will need to succeed in the role
- Significant senior technology, engineering and platform-delivery leadership experience in global payments, sanctions screening, financial crime technology or a comparable regulated, mission-critical domain.
- Proven delivery of complex, multi-year transformation across regions, business lines, platforms and suppliers, including legacy modernisation and product/platform operating models.
- Strong knowledge of transaction and name screening, list management, matching/filtering, adjudication, case management, discounting, customer outreach and associated regulatory controls.
- Deep understanding of cross-border payments, ISO 20022, payment messaging and payment-processing controls, together with the operation of high-volume, high-availability and preferably 24x7 services.
- Practical command of modern cloud/hybrid engineering, containerisation, APIs, event streaming, distributed data, CI/CD, observability, cybersecurity, data protection, resilience and disaster recovery.
- Experience leading controlled data, analytics, machine-learning or AI capabilities, and managing technology risk, audit, regulatory assurance, suppliers, utilities and build-versus-buy decisions.
- Evidence of building and developing large, globally distributed and culturally diverse teams, with exceptional executive, regulator and cross-functional stakeholder influence.
- Relevant degree, technology qualification or equivalent professional experience; cloud, architecture, engineering, resilience or security certification is desirable.
You’ll achieve more when you join HSBC.
