About the Role
We have a rare opportunity within our Global Impoundments team for a Global Risk & Planning Lead – Tailings and Dams. This role is pivotal in strengthening Alcoa’s global risk management capability, ensuring that all tailings, residue, and water storage facilities are planned, designed, and operated in line with Alcoa Mandated Standards, leading industry frameworks, and regulatory requirements.
In this role, you will lead the development and application of global risk frameworks for tailings and dams, ensuring robust identification, assessment, and communication of dam safety risks. You will play a critical role in preventing tailings and dams failures by enabling clear, timely, and actionable risk reporting to senior leadership.
Key Purpose & Activities
Lead global tailings and dams risk management, including identifying dam safety risks and developing, maintaining, and applying risk frameworks, tools, and processes to prevent failures.
Lead the development and governance of Alcoa’s 25-year Tailings and Dams Master Plan, ensuring delivery of an optimal portfolio of projects to support safe, efficient storage through to closure.
Oversee governance and assurance processes by verifying risk controls and validating outcomes from design, construction, audits, and other assurance activities across global operations.
Prepare and deliver clear, concise risk and planning insights to senior leadership, including Executive and Board-level reporting on risk status, mitigation actions, and strategic implications.
Lead long-term infrastructure and closure planning, ensuring sustainable, safe, and efficient tailings and dams development and rehabilitation across a 25-year planning horizon.

What you can bring to the role
Tertiary qualifications in Civil, Geological, or Mining Engineering, with demonstrated experience in civil engineering, risk management, or planning roles.
Extensive experience in civil engineering, risk management, or strategic planning roles, ideally within a resources or heavy industry environment.
Strong expertise in risk assessment and planning methodologies, including tools such as FMEA, Bowtie analysis, HAZOP, and Fault Tree Analysis.
Demonstrated ability to identify, assess, and communicate critical business risks to stakeholders at site, regional, and executive levels.
Solid working knowledge of international tailings standards and best practice guidelines (e.g. ICMM, ANCOLD, ICOLD, MAC/CDA, USBR).
Highly developed communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate across diverse cultures, work effectively with global teams, and travel as required.
