Annual Base Salary Range: $67,200 - 79,800

Global Barley Innovation, the barley breeding and research development headquarters for Anheuser-Busch InBev, is seeking a Pre-breeding and Early Generation Specialist to join our team. This position will report to the Pre-breeding and Early Generation manager and will play a crucial role in our efforts to develop high-quality barley varieties for our growers, maltsters, and breweries worldwide.

This position will primarily work in a greenhouse setting with a focus on the Early Generation phase of variety development, including Crossing through Pre-Yield trial seed development. Additional responsibilities may require work in a field setting and limited travel to barley production regions within the United States. Candidates must demonstrate competency in crop variety development standards and practices.

Responsibilities:

  • Maintain barley trials in a field and greenhouse setting. This position primarily works in early generation utilizing both traditional and speed breeding techniques.
  • Monitor crop health and ensure minimum quality standards utilizing fertilizers, herbicides, and other chemical treatments when necessary.
  • Conduct crossing trials, including emasculation, pollination, and maintenance of new barley populations.
  • Harvest, process, and catalogue barley populations and lines in both greenhouse and field settings, ensuring accurate record-keeping and organization.
  • Assist in the collection, processing, and storage of seeds, including seed cleaning, handling, and packaging. Maintain seed inventory and ensure proper labeling and organization.
  • Conduct tissue sampling for genetic screening to support our breeding programs.
  • Maintain detailed and accurate records of experimental procedures, observations, and results. Prepare reports, summaries, and presentations to communicate findings and progress to research teams and stakeholders.
  • Assist with other related tasks as assigned by the Pre-breeding and Early Generation manager.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in plant sciences, agronomy, botany, or a related field.
  • Ability to perform physical tasks, including lifting, bending, and working in greenhouse and field environments.
  • Strong attention to detail and excellent organizational skills.
  • Familiarity with basic laboratory procedures and equipment is a plus.
  • Willingness to learn and follow protocols carefully.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
