The Texas General Land Office is seeking a Survey Technician I (Surveying Technician) within the Surveying Department of the agency.

The Surveying Technician performs complex (journey-level) land surveying and mapping work. Works under general supervision, with moderate latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment. Employees at this level may work more independently and may routinely assist other staff in performing job duties of greater complexity.

The Texas General Land Office primarily serves the schoolchildren, veterans, and the environment of Texas. The agency does so by preserving our history, maximizing state revenue through innovative administration, and through the prudent stewardship of state lands and natural resources.

What Your Contributions to the GLO Will be:

·Researches, investigates, and assimilates survey records, archival records, maps, aerial photographs, and other information used to make state ownership and boundary determinations, navigable and/or perennial stream determinations, and to identify areas of encroachments on State-owned lands; will assemble information and prepare overlays, manually and by using Computer Aided Design (CAD) software, and make mathematical calculations as needed, accurately and timely.

·Identifies, gathers, and compiles required geographic data from a wide variety of sources including censuses, field observations, satellite imagery, aerial photographs, existing maps, and archival records to respond to inquires regarding land in which the State of Texas and/or the Permanent School Fund may have an interest.

·May inspect the work of private land surveyors or surveying/engineering companies for compliance with applicable laws, statutes, rules, and specifications. Reviews the content of survey documents and plats submitted to the Veterans Land Board for land purchases by veterans through the Land Program and computes the mathematical closure and acreage of the documents and plats.

·Reviews maps, plats, graphs, and/or diagrams using geographic information software and related equipment. Conducts records research for evaluation and processing of miscellaneous easements or other leases being routed by the GLO Right-of-Way Team and/or Leasing Operations.

·Assists with the development of geographic information systems that may link parcel maps and orthophotos with environmental data, archival/historical data, transportation data, and surveying data to produce maps or quantify information about the impacts of features on parcel ownership.

Prepares Working Sketches utilizing Computer Aided Design (CAD) software or other computer programs, compiles information from the archive records and other related sources for surveying projects and makes recommendations for efficient operation of field surveys.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

·Minimum 60 accredited college credit hours.

·May substitute full-time land surveying, drafting, Geographic Information System, technical, or mathematics related experience on a year for year basis.

·Experience with Computer-Aided Design (CAD)

·Experience with land surveying (field work), including experience with operating conventional and GPS surveying equipment.

Preferred Qualifications:

·Advanced experience with Computer-Aided Design (CAD) software (AutoCAD, Carlson CAD, etc.), Leica or Trimble GPS surveying equipment, and advanced land surveying field experience.

·Qualified to take the Fundamentals of Surveying Exam (FS) with the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying for certification as a Surveyor-In-Training with the Texas Board of Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors within the next two (2) years.
