Adaptive PE and Assistive Technology Teacher

Position Overview

Greenville ISD is seeking a collaborative and student-centered Adaptive PE and Assistive Technology Teacher to support students with disabilities in accessing, participating in, and making meaningful progress in their educational programs. This position combines specialized physical education instruction with assistive technology assessment, consultation, training, and support to increase student access, participation, independence, and success.

Primary Purpose

Provide specially designed physical education instruction and assistive technology services to students with disabilities based on individual needs and Individualized Education Programs. Assess student needs, develop and implement individualized instruction and supports, recommend appropriate adaptations and assistive technology, and collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to promote student access, participation, independence, and educational progress.

Qualifications

Education and Certification

• Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university required
• Valid Texas educator certification or other appropriate professional credential, as applicable
• Special Education certification preferred
• Physical Education certification preferred
• Training or experience in adaptive physical education preferred
• Experience working with students with disabilities and assistive technology preferred

Special Knowledge and Skills

• Knowledge of special education laws, regulations, and Individualized Education Program requirements
• Knowledge of motor development and adaptations for students with disabilities
• Knowledge of assistive technology devices, software, applications, accessibility tools, and services
• Knowledge of strategies to support students with disabilities in accessing instruction and educational environments
• Ability to assess student needs and develop individualized instructional programs and supports
• Ability to adapt activities, equipment, instructional strategies, technology, and environments to meet student needs
• Ability to make recommendations regarding appropriate assistive technology devices and services
• Ability to provide training and consultation to students, staff, and families
• Ability to collect, analyze, and interpret student progress data
• Strong communication, organizational, collaboration, problem-solving, and interpersonal skills

Experience

• Experience working with students with disabilities preferred
• Experience providing adaptive physical education services preferred
• Experience with assistive technology assessment and implementation preferred

Major Responsibilities and Duties

Instruction and Student Support

• Provide specially designed physical education instruction in accordance with students' Individualized Education Programs.
• Assess student needs related to motor skills, physical development, accessibility, independence, and participation in educational activities.
• Develop and implement individualized instructional activities, interventions, adaptations, and supports.
• Adapt activities, equipment, technology, instructional strategies, and environments to meet individual student needs.
• Support student participation in general physical education, classroom instruction, and other school-based activities as appropriate.
• Promote student independence, confidence, physical development, and meaningful participation across educational settings.

Assessment and Assistive Technology

• Conduct assistive technology evaluations and assessments in collaboration with other service providers to determine student needs.
• Participate in multidisciplinary evaluations and provide written recommendations as appropriate.
• Identify and recommend assistive technology devices, software, applications, equipment, and accessibility supports based on individual student needs.
• Assist with the selection, acquisition, setup, customization, and implementation of assistive technology devices and software.
• Provide consultation and technical support to campus staff regarding the implementation and use of assistive technology.
• Train students, teachers, paraprofessionals, related service providers, and families on the appropriate use of assistive technology and adaptive equipment.
• Monitor student use of assistive technology and collect data regarding effectiveness and student progress.
• Troubleshoot assistive technology equipment and coordinate repairs, replacements, or technical support as appropriate.
• Maintain an inventory of district assistive technology equipment, adaptive equipment, and materials.

ARD and Collaboration

• Participate in Admission, Review, and Dismissal Committee meetings as appropriate.
• Provide input regarding student needs, services, accommodations, goals, assistive technology, adaptations, and supports.
• Assist Admission, Review, and Dismissal Committees in determining appropriate assistive technology devices and services necessary for students to access and participate in their educational programs.
• Collaborate with physical education teachers, special education staff, general education staff, paraprofessionals, related service providers, campus administrators, families, and other members of multidisciplinary teams.
• Provide consultation and recommendations regarding adaptations, equipment, technology, and supports needed to increase student access and participation.
• Support the transition of assistive technology devices, equipment, and services between campuses or educational settings as appropriate.

Progress Monitoring and Documentation

• Collect and maintain data to monitor student progress toward Individualized Education Program goals.
• Monitor the effectiveness of instructional strategies, adaptive equipment, and assistive technology and make recommendations for adjustments as appropriate.
• Prepare progress reports and required documentation in accordance with district procedures.
• Maintain accurate service schedules, student records, evaluations, recommendations, equipment records, and instructional documentation.
• Maintain confidentiality of student information and ensure services are provided and documented in accordance with district procedures and Individualized Education Programs.

Professional Responsibilities

• Maintain adaptive physical education and assistive technology equipment and ensure instructional environments are safe and appropriate.
• Remain current on evidence-based practices related to adaptive physical education, assistive technology, accessibility, and special education.
• Participate in district and campus professional development activities.
• Serve as a resource to campus staff regarding adaptive physical education, assistive technology, accessibility, and strategies for supporting students with disabilities.
• Follow district safety protocols and emergency procedures.
• Support Special Education Department and district initiatives.
• Perform other duties as assigned by the Director of Special Education.

Supervisory Responsibilities

• Supervise students during assigned instructional activities and services.
• Provide guidance and training to paraprofessionals and other staff regarding student-specific adaptations, equipment, and assistive technology as appropriate.

Working Conditions

Physical Demands

• Frequent standing, walking, bending, kneeling, reaching, and demonstrating physical activities.
• May assist students with mobility and positioning in accordance with district procedures and training.
• Frequent use of computers, technology equipment, adaptive equipment, and instructional materials.
• Occasional lifting, carrying, transporting, setting up, and moving assistive technology devices, adaptive equipment, and materials.

Environmental Factors

• Work may occur in classrooms, gymnasiums, playgrounds, outdoor facilities, district offices, campuses, and other instructional environments.
• Services may be provided in students' homes or community settings when required by a student's educational program.
• Districtwide travel may be required to provide services and support students at multiple campuses.

Mental Demands

• Ability to communicate effectively, solve problems, manage multiple priorities, analyze student needs, and collaborate with multidisciplinary teams.
• Ability to manage service schedules, documentation requirements, assessments, and varying student needs.
• Maintain confidentiality, emotional control, sound judgment, and professionalism.
